5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Anyone ever had their cruise control abruptly deactivate itself? I was climbing a hill on US 101 and the cruise control abruptly shut off. I had set the cruise somewhere between 65 and 70 and the road was fairly even and smooth, albeit, an uphill climb.
I'm thinking that maybe my engine couldn't keep the car going at the desired speed in 5th because I was going maybe 61 or 62 when the cruise control shut off. I had to put the car in 4th the rest of the way up the hill.

From CRUISE CONTROL – CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM manual page CC-17:
CRUISE main indicator light remains on (Cruise control is "automatically" canceled)
• Vehicle speed is lower than low speed limit (approx. 40 km/h (25 mph)) while running with cruise control on
• Vehicle speed is lower than stored speed by approx. 16 km/h (9.9 mph) or more

the cruise is not designed to abruptly shut off merely because it could not take the increased load in 5th. the cruise control will actually downshift to the most appropriate gear to keep its set speed. that's been toyota's cruise control logic for decades. lol.
you did not mention, but is there any chance that your foot slightly grazed the brake pedal? any slight braking input (or anything enough to get the brake lights going for that matter), will definitely cancel cruise.
^ he has a manual transmission, i doubt it would downshift on it's own without having the clutch engaged.
That is weird though, i've never had it happen and i have gone up a fairly steep incline with it on...it just revs the engine higher...i usually just take it off when i go up a hill and ease the gas on myself...

oh shit. ignore my post. i totally forgot you had a manual transmission. my bad.
Never had that happen to me. But with a manual trany, if the hill comes on suddenly then the car wont be able to take it in 5th, and you have to down shift.

And don't.......then the........

CC drops.

I don't really care what the manual says. it's just that the car wouldn't be able to take the hill in 5th gear at 1,000-1,500 RPM
The engine was spinning faster than that. At 1000 to 1500 in 5th, it's maybe 35 to 40 MPH. At 2000 in 5th, I'm probably going about 55. Remember that I do have a 2.4L engine.
I was driving up the California coast via 101 from LA to SF with 3 passengers, AC, and luggage so it's not exactly a flat route nor a light load.
oh! well with that as the case, i'll retract my posts (#3 and #9 especially). that's probably barely enough load to drop the speed "approximately 9 mph".
edit: sorry to luna2 and redline_me. i assumed too much.
