I have a question when you go to the dealership and u get the full check up with your oil change shouldn't they change your filter each time or do they do it once and a while... because i opened my filter today to change to k&n (btw ended up with wrong size got the one for the hybrid..so i have to wait for shipping) and the filter i had in there was really dirty and had dirt and everything lodged up in there seems like it hasnt bin changed since i got the car.
Oil/ filter should be new and fluid levels topped off.
yeah thats what i thought so should i switch back to the old filter before i go get my oil change to see if they change it or not? or just find somone else to do them for me.
They may or may not check the air filters but if they do and they need to be replaced they will ask you first because those dealer filters are pricey. Nothing is free is that is what you are asking.

Well, if you think you were screwed, then mark your current filter in a place where it is not obvious. Take a picture of it with the date. Then the next time you get your oil changed, check the filter. If they didn't change it, go right to the Service Manager of the dealership. Also, I would consider taking my business elsewhere.
If the oil is changed regularly, a skip of a one time filter change(even two), isn't going to hurt your motor. The biggest thing is that the filter doesn't clog, then the bypass valve opens and you get no filtration.
I think he is talking about air filter and not oil filter. Why would he go and take the oil filter off if he got an oil change? That requires him to drain the oil in order to see the oil filter and fill it back up with oil of his own which defeats the purpose of going to the dealer for an oil change.
As for the air filter that the OP was talking about, the dealership that gave me 3 free oil changes and where I got my car last year said they only change the air filter once a year. I thought they change it each time they do oil changes. Since I have my K&N drop in which is what you purchased, you still change it once a year. but the filter is reusable.
but i agree that the OP is refering to the air filter. and if you go in for an oil change they will not be replacing your air filter unless they check it and determine it needs replacing. dealer oil changes typically only include visual inspection/topoff of the fluids and if your lucky they'll actually inspect your AF every couple of oil changes and replace it to make some more money off you...

K&N does NOT make oil filters

ive had the car for about 2 years with like 48,xxx miles and they have never once asked me to change it ive always thought they do it as part as the package i pay for and they usually do top of fluids i always check. but my k&n arrives tomorrow.
I think that it's unusual that they wouldn't at least check the air filter and let you know what condition it was in as well as give a recommendation. The Toyota dealer that I go to does that and more. With my previous cars I went to Jiffy Lube and they always did the same and would even show me the filter whether it need changing or not.
Heck, my last oil change at Toyota, they even told me that my rear brake pads were going to need replacing soon and that the rotors were within range to be machined, (I'll replace and upgrade the pads and rotors myself). After that oil change I replaced the filter with a K&N even though the old filter wasn't due for a changing yet.
yeah i was surprised they didn't tell me either it was pretty dirty cause there was rocks dust bugs and all kinds of stuff in there i vacuumed it out with a shop vac and had to put my old filter back in there due to the filter i got was wrong size.. and i kno auto zone has them that's where i got mine from but they don't have them in stock. also my back brakes need to be changed they are at like 10% and my front are at like 30% but im going to change them all out for ceramics =)
Now that's a surprise the dealer passed up a chance to make a quick buck?
But usually these are fine with 2-years/24K miles. You can also buy them with coupon and change it yourself. It's a lot cheaper.
As far as brake pads go, I'd recommend Akebono ProAct ceramics. These are very long lasting FF friction ratings vs the dealer's EE ratings (a cheaper version of Akebono, AK xxx-xxx EE edge code). If you want GG rating I'm not sure if Akebono Street Performance is available for yours yet.
