5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Posted in "Dealership/Oil Changes" thread, but I think the title on this one is more fitting... Sorry for duplicate post
"I couldn't find any threads about K&N recommendations on this site (i did search through some tundra/bmw forums that popped up first in google) but wanted to hear from camry owners. I purchased a K&N air filter about a month ago, but after reading some different forums, a lot of folks are recommending against it due to an increased amount of dirt going into the engine.
What are your thoughts, do the potential risks outweigh the benefits?"

With a replacement filter that has the same or smaller filter area, the only way to get more air flow at higher RPMs is to have either more holes or bigger ones. The oil helps catch some particles or it would be really inefficient.
Your OEM pleated filter has more surface area than the K&N so the K&N has bigger holes and less pressure drop = more fine particles entering the engine.
I use one for the cost aspect but I'm only keeping the car for 7 years/100,000 miles so the subsequent owners can worry about the extra wear.

Hmm.. Do you recommend I switch back to paper? The DC area has "code orange" air quality days... I've been googling this topic and there are some stories of drivers spending money on repairs "caused by" K&N filters (i.e. MAF sensor, throttle body, etc). One guy did point out that K&N had to dedicate an entire page to the MAF problem:
If you were to keep your car past 100k miles, let's say 200k, would you still use the K&N?

I personally wouldn't use a K&N if I intended to keep the car for near forever.
A lot of problems are caused by the users over oiling or not allowing the filter to dry after oiling. I clean my MAF anyway (takes less than 5 minutes) every other oil change. Haven't looked at my throttle body yet after 39,000 miles.
I put K&N into everything I own. I have had no issues. 244k on a gmc pickup bought new K&N from the start.
Ford Escort bought from original owner at 42k now has 215k, no prob. Malibu bought new 83k no problem. As for the oil drying out, if it did completely it wouldn't do its job would it? I never wait, I put it in and start the engine to fill the oil filter with no problems (clean air filter about every 5-6th oil change)
My new Camry will get its K&N when I pick it up from Autozone on Saturday.
Ditto. I've always used K&N on my vehicles and have never had a wear issue, and that includes lots of off-roading in areas with extremely fine, talcum powder-like dust that's often extremely alkaline. I've never read any definitive proof of problems with K&N filters, and have only seen speculation. I trust my K&N filters.
