Question 2005 Camry Engine Swap Help

Hi everyone,

I swapped out a camry engine I4 2azfe for my sisters car b/c her daughter ran the engine with no radiator fluid when it burst over the bay bridge.

Anyway, to get an engine inexpensively and fast I went to ebay and found a legit auto parts place over in California to get a low mileage motor. I had it shipped over and I swapped into the camry.

It started up fine and when test driven the transmission was acting funny. It felt as if the transmission could not keep up with the engine rpm like slippage.

Taking it to a Toyota dealership they said the codes did not match being that it was not a california car and it had a california engine in it. Does this make sense to anyone? I think they said it need some component for a few $$$

But, we got different opinions from others... ecu needed to be changed, etc...

Does this sound like a transmission problem or computer related problem??

Any known fixes?

Thank you,

Jon

Sounds like they sold you a PZEV engine. I would stay away from PZEV engines unless I was replacing one of them. You'll probably need a new exhaust manifold, possibly new engine harness for the additional oxygen sensor and a PZEV ECU too.

Thanks for the reply.

We still have the original engine in the garage with harness and exhaust manifold.

Where would you pick up PZEV ecu from if needed? couldn't find any on ebay. I might be able to get one from where I bought the engine from.

As well, I did see a noticeable difference in the exhaust manifold from this calif. engine to the engine I pulled out.
