Replacement key?

A friend lost their only key for their '07 Camry LS and the locksmith has her freaked out, telling her that if it has a certain kind of key, it will be $1500+ to "replace the computer and key".

Sounds like a load of bull to me, but I am not well versed in Toyotas.
After a little searching and reading about the smart-key, I do not believe her car has this feature. Do the cars with the "smart key" all have push button start?

She's panicing and they are towing the car 60+ miles to the dealer right now. I don't want her to be taken advantage of by an shady dealer...

How much should it cost to have a key made for this car?

Thanks.

Smart-key's have push start button. if she does not have that and uses a regular key, it should cost no more $250-300.

If she has push start button, key will cost more but not $1,500. Just call the dealership and ask them how much the key is. Since the car is going there now, you'll find out. Shady dealer? It cant get any more shaddier than that locksmith ripping you off.

The locksmith has no stake in it, he didn't take advantage of her. He just commented that he's know of Toyotas that needed this done and it was $1500.
I was hoping, for her sake, that he was misinformed.

The car was already scheduled to go in today for a rear seatbelt issue. She couldn't drive it, so it's being towed 60 miles to the nearest dealer.

Hopefully it won't be too bad.

Was the car new or used? If it was new, she should of gotten 2 masters and 1 valet key. If its used, she should of asked for an extra key.

Thats like having an apartment or a house and was given 1 key or only have 1 key.
