2007 Camry brake squealing

My v6 Camry has about 41k miles on it; the front brakes have been squealing for 5k to 10k miles. I don't see a lot of "brake "squealing" items on here, which I hope is a good thing.

It's a high pitched squeal, and is most pronounced when I hit the brakes; it usually does not continue the whole time I'm applying the brakes.

I initially thought the original pads might have worn out quickly, but they are in great shape, both front and rear.

I removed the front wheels and pads, cleaned everything off - didn't help.

I removed the front wheels and pads and cleaned everything off with brake cleaner, let it sit for a while, then wiped it down and applied grease to the backs of the pads. That didn't fix it.

A friend of mine swears by this cleaner that you actually spray on the rotor; I've seen that at Napa but never used it. At this point I think I'm going to try it.

AFter that, I'm not sure what I can do except replace the pads.

Does anyone have any experience with the spray on rotor/pad cleaner? Any other ideas?

The squeal usually means they need to be replaced. check your rotors... and what type of pads are they?
The only time ive known breaks to squeal is when theyre screaming, change me

The pads are the originals.

They really don't look very worn; I've compared them side by side to new pads. That said, I may end up replacing them this weekend or next if nothing else works.

Mostly useless answers...

When was your Camry built? Mo/yr It's on your drivers door pillar.

TSB BR008-06 if your car was made before before Oct. 2006

You can check your VIN number against the TSB listing.

You are over the warranty period but can still buy the parts.

Mine does the same but when i put my wheels back on, i checked the pads and rotors and they were fine. It doesn't do it all the time but it was worrying me.

Thank you, njerald, that's very useful. I believe it happens in both forward and reverse, but the "at slow speed" is VERY applicable to my issue.

Serves me right.

I need to come out here more often.

I reported this problem to the dealer and they replaced the parts. A question - the 3/36 warranty had expired but we had the 7/100 0$ deductible ESP. Would the 7/100 covered this TSB. Thanks!

Disregard. The applicable TSB is BR007-07 and the mileage when first reported was ~58K. i'm not going to throw a fit over this considering the mileage.

You can probably try cleaning and lubing them and try for a while before replacing stuff. Do you see "AK xxx-xxx EE" markings on the pads backing plate? AK means it's made by Akebono, which is quite a decent brand. However, they do make cheap EE friction rated stuff for Toyota. Akebono's aftermarket ProActs are FF rated. Really quiet even without noise shims! So I'd be surprised if Akebono pads are causing you problems.

Not sure why the simple support plates could be a problem. Plating maybe? I mean how cheap can one get on these thin support plates?

Did you apply grease to the edges of the pads, where they meet the tracks on the brackets?

I don't know about the rotor spray you mentioned, but I don't think you spray any rubbery brake quiet products onto the friction areas. That would be dangerous, as Permatex and CRC both warned.

The Permatex ceramic lube has an advantage over synthetic gels in that there are ceramic particles in the lube that cushion metal parts. Sort of like moly in some greases.

I did not apply the grease to the edges of the pads. I thought of that yesterday. However, I'm not sure that would help - in theory it would only scrape while you're hitting the brakes or letting off, correct?

The problem got so bad that I replaced the pads yesterday. Did a thorough cleaning, then replaced pads/clips/etc. These brakes are not nearly as easy to put back together as my explorer.

Then, in the process of trying to rotate the tires, I discovered that no matter how hard I try I can't get the rear wheels off. That's 1 feature of this car that drives me nuts - the wheels sticking to the axle.

Hey, in the end - no brake squealing so far today. I get a squeal about 50% of the time as I'm backing out of the garage, but that's it.
