Camry Service Question

I have a 2007 Camry XLE 4 cyl. It has aprox. 27k miles. When I brought it in for service they told me I need 2 services 1. a fuel injection cleaning because of carbon buildup in the engine ($150) and 2. a new cabin air filter ($129)....do you recommend these services for those prices?

Hey, I moved your thread from the intro section to this Camry section. These are some pretty cool guys who know the Camry very well. They can help.
Good Luck and Welcome to TN....

^ I agree with djkor. You don't need to have your fuel injectors cleaned at 27,000 miles. If you want to, you can add a bottle of a good injector cleaner (I like Chevron with Techron available at places like Wal-Mart) to your gas tank as preventive maintainance. As far as the cabin air filter, you can get an aftermarket one and change it yourself for around $20. I also have a 2007 Camry and I have around 33,000 miles on it. I haven't done anythimng but add a bottle of injector cleaner to the car and about 3 weeks ago I took out the cabin air filter and cleaned it a bit with my shop vac and put it back in. (If it wasn't late on a Sunday evening I probably would have gone and purchased a new filter.) That took me 5 minutes including the vacuuming part.

Two more bits of advice. First, read what the maintainance schedule is in your owner's manual and follow that. Second, find a new dealer. This one is only interested in extractng as much money as possible from your wallet, suggesting a fuel injection service at 27,000 miles.

more on cabin filter...

the norm for part and labor should be less than half of what your dealer is suggesting. find a new dealer. the part is $10-$30 (at the most) and the labor is stupid easy.

yah -- don't do this at the dealer -- go to the nearest auto parts store and get your air filter for 10 bucks or less (online) and then pick up a fuel injection cleaner (kragens sells them cheap)

you can do both for under 30 bucks if you just change the air filter on your own.

I would never go to a dealer for service. They rape you.

I agree with the above posts. Buy an aftermarket filter and install it yourself. It's very simple. The dealers charge a lot more for the filter itself so, I don't buy them from Toyota.

I use a bottle of Chevron Techron near every oil change, (3,000 miles). Add the whole bottle to your gas tank before filling, so that it mixes well. It has been recommended by a few trusted mechanics that I know who DO NOT recommend store bought fuel injector cleaners. I followed this with a '95 Taurus that I bought in '96 and never had an issue with the fuel injectors. I still own the car and it has over 275,000 miles on the engine.

Don't bother pushing for things you don't need!!! I would consider changing the cabin filter but if you buy it yourself, empty your glove box and pull the back of the glove box towards you you can see and change filter behind it. Trust me I know nothing about cars and I do this on my 07 camry in less than 5 minutes. Welcome and good luck!

That's a lots of bling bling that Toyota ask from you!

I suggest 2x can of Seafom, I full can fro gas tank , the second can add half from brake booster and soak it for 2h and start your car and fume will clean your carbon. The other half you could do the same thing brake booster 1 week after to clean again and i'am sure you engine will be in tip top shapes.

Buy the cabin filter in USA walmart, Fram Freshbreese for 15-20$ US and way cheaper than toyota cabing fiter.

A car with 27,000 miles doesn't need a seafoam treatment, IMHO.

The only injector cleaner proven to work I believe is Chevron Techron.

Some will swear by BG products too.

I just use Shell Gasoline.

Yes, you should do the Cabin Air Filter, you'll notice the difference immediately and it is good for you. But it shouldn't cost that much. I think I replaced my Cabin air filter at 15,000 miles as part of a scheduled maintenance and these are under $100 as part of the usual (tire rotation, Fuel Synthetic oil change, inspections etc)

What aftermarket companies make cabin air filters for our car? I'd rather save some money, and I just hit 30K miles (2007 Camry)....Nevermind...I just went to Autozone and picked one up and installed it. Easy and needed. After 15K (since the dealer did it last) the filter was nasty (completely black). Bugs, leaves, lots of dirt. Looks worse than I've ever seen my engine air filter look.

The only way you need the fuel injectors cleaned is if all 27,000 miles were sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

No. Not at those prices. $129 to change a cabin filter?

If you are not experiencing driveability problems then you shouldn't even need a dealer fuel injector cleaning. Who knows, maybe they'll just take the $150 and dump a $5 Techron in your tank?? (Unless they swear they'll use the canister that dumps strong cleaner directly into the fuel rail and actually do. But you wouldn't need that at 27K miles.)

If you regularly use Top Tier gas you shouldn't have problems. However, an occasional can of Techron Concentrate Plus (they used to have the Fuel System Cleaner) should help. This is stronger than the Fuel Injector Cleaner at Costco, but you can use the weak stuff every 1000 miles or "as needed".
