For anyone having steering popping and knocking syndromes...
I've decided to inform you guys of a solution to a rather rare problem which appears to happen with Gen5, Gen5.5 and Gen6 Camrys. Probably Gen6.5 will develop this too, as well as previous generations.
After some time, you may develop certain popping noises when you are turning the steering wheel. In particular, this is easily audible when you are performing full turns or parking maneuvers.
When you hear a pop as you turn the steering wheel, you can also feel a slight knock both in the steering wheel and the brake pedal. The pop and knocking sounds are loud enough for your front passenger to hear if you tell them about it.
Anyway, after some research on TN, and also after investigating this with my mechanic, we've concluded that the "intermediate steering shaft" is causing this noise. It does NOT pose a hazard to the safe steering operation, nor does it actually alter the steering capability of the car.
The solution was to lubricate this shaft. My mechanic did this today, and all of the popping and knocking went away 100%. I hope this helps someone who is having similar issues.

I'm going to the mechanic tomorrow to do dis. Its been on my nerves, and i've been scared to even gas my car in the parking lot just a tiny bit lol
Go for it! I did not see precisely the product which my mechanic used but it was an orange-yellow spray aerosol can. This chemical has a pretty strong smell because I could still sniff that stuff for the rest of the day in the cabin. BUT, it instantly removed all of the noises and knocking! My mechanic curled up under the steering wheel where the pedals are and that's where he sprayed. I don't know very much about mechanics so I cannot tell you where precisely this intermediate steering shaft is, but he did NOT have to take anything apart.
