Windshield Blast

I searched but didn't find much.
So I have this 05 LE. It is 100 degrees outside and I am going down the fwy at 85mph with the AC on. Cars in front of me are way ahead. I suddenly hear a blast and have an area of cracked/smashed front windshield that is larger than a baseball. I recall seeing a tiny air bubble in the same area when washing the car. I am pretty sure that no stones etc hit the glass.
So question is, has anybody else had this happen.
Any good referrals for windshield replacement in South CA. The dealer parts only is $1255 + $69 for the trim. Even they told me to go outside as their price is crazy. On the other hand I don't want shitty work. My insurance deductible is high so can't get help there.

Deductible is $1000 and I always refuse glass. I am cheap. I think if I do the math over the years I am still ahead, but now that I have to cough up all the money at once it sucks. But again has anybody else had this happen. I am sure the glass was defective and no objects were involved. It was also scary to say the least.

I once had an object literally come from nowhere and put a star in front of my face. Driving on a lonely highway, during the day with not another vehicle within sight in any direction. It was a VW Bus with no hood for anything to bounce off of. It happens. A meteorite sounds silly on first blush, but it is possible. On another occasion, well past dark, I was sitting on the patio when one came in and buried into the back yard several inches. Saw the orange glow as it wizzed by. Scary as hell, but could see where it hit. Dug it out about 8 inches down. Still hot when I got to it. Strange things do happen.

After 5 years or so, it is hard to say it was a defect in the glass. Especially so if it left a huge dent.

Actually usually people do NOT have glass coverage because it adds too much to the monthly bill. I don't know how it is in States, but here in Canada in fact some insurance companies outright refuse to insure the windshield for any reason because it's so easily damaged.

Sorry to hear you had that happen, after that much time it would be impossible to know if it is a defect. But after manufacture I am sure they check them very carefully, all the liability suits on defective windshields after all. I am sure you have chain shops in your area that work for insurance company's. These sort's of places do high volume and imagine could do good work at a reasonable price. Call your insurance company and get them to recommend a place. They will know who will give the best bang for the buck RE: Price vs quality. Your experience is exactly why I just anti up on the insurance, one never knows when. But it will come

I have family living near Toronto and have heard the story's of how expensive insurance is there. I live down the road in Montreal and I have glass insurance with a $50.00 deductible. Better yet the glass replacement places swallow the deductible so It cost me nothing, well nothing but the extra cost on my policy. Which is $20 a year. Insurance on a 2010 SE is costing me a total of $610 with a a 2 million liability and general $500 deductible (except glass), $100 deductible would of cost me $150 extra a year . An it is fully covered. Even full replacement if stolen within 2 years.

Wonder how that compares to Toronto?

I did have family living in Edmonton and that place you could never afford glass insurance. They use stones on the road in winter for grip. Is to cold for salt. Everyone has cracked windshields.

Happy driving

Thanks everybody. So I called today and found a shop that had good reviews online. They came to my place and changed the windshield for less than $200. It seems decent so far.
