5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just bought a 2010 SE V6, and with a child I really need a 12V outlet in the back seat. I am thinking of installing one in the rear of the console, along with possibly a 300W inverter and 120V outlet back there as well for laptops, etc. Has anyone done this yet, any pictures / guides? I know how to do it electrically, just hoping that someone can tell me there is room behind the panel before i rip it all apart and discover there isn't. Anyone have pictures of a completed install of additional outlets for the rear passengers?
I think this is an actual first for this topic! I read most of this stuff and I am unaware of any previous discussion. Since the XLE model plumbs a/c into the back of the console there certainly should be room there for a 12v outlet. As far as an inverter is concerned, there might be room in there for a small inverter--enough to run a computer, but keep in mind there is no ventilation. Power is released in the form of heat so consider connecting it under the front seat if you can find room, or in the trunk with a muffin fan. Finally, a 120v plug---try looking at the travel trailer/camper parts stores. If anyone has something like a single plug 120 volt outlet, you will find it there. Also consider running a positive fused wire back to the battery so you don't have to go through the fuse block and suffer from voltage drops. Wire it with a toggle switch next to the plug so you can turn off the inverter when not in use. Good luck.

My intention for the inverter is to mount it in the engine compartment, and dismantle it and relocate the "internal" power outlet with extension wires. Would make for a clean install too since most inverter cases use "flush mount" receptacles which i can snap onto the console rear
. I was hoping someone had done this before me, so I could see pictures. I don't even have the car yet (It's being shipped) and I am planning out the install, and I have searched ALL OVER for information
Does anyone have pics of taking a Gen 6 console apart? Or detailed instructions so I don't have to hunt for clips / screws.
GEN 5&6 DIY section at the top of this forum would help.
As for the console, once you get the gear shifter part of the console out of the way, open the console lid. Inside at the bottom, you will see a felt like fabric liner. Lift that up. You will see two screws, unscrew those to take apart the console.
