Plz help. need info on interior lighting messed up by audio shop
So for the past 3 weeks I have been trying to get the eBay lighted door sills installed. The reason it took so long is bc I only have time on Sundays to get it done. Well I took it to a place and the first week they hooked up the lighted door sill to a constant 12v so that they were on all the time, even when the car was off. The second week I took the car back and they told me that they had so idea how to hook them up so that the lights were on when the door was opened and off then the doors were closed. I was told something about the car being weird and the lights going on when the door was closed and going off then when the door was open? I didnt understand but I was told to come back next week and the guy working on the car would do some research. So i went back today and i was told that he had no idea how to hook the wires up to how i wanted them. On when doors are open and off the doors are closed. He said he tried to do some kind of reverse and told me that did work. I told him never mind and was going to find a different shop to do the work.
Well when it got dark I went to my car to pick up some groceries and I find that the courtesy light, map lights, rear dome lights, passenger/ driver visor lights, inside trunk light, and also the digital clock do don’t function. Also the dash board light does not blink when the keyless entry alarm is activated. (Although it does come on when the car is on and in motion)
Do you all think that this could be a major problem, like a wire being cut on accident? Or can this be a simple fix buy replacing a fuse or plugging in a wire that was unplugged?
I’m hoping I can take the car to Toyota tomorrow and get it looked at. I and if a wire was cut during his attempt to install the door sills, how much do you think it will cost to replace?
You should check the fuses first, sounds like a fuse blew. Other than that, what kind of shop did you bring your car to? If they screwed up on such a easy task.
Why would they even hook it up to a 12v constant?! ...
go to a new shop if you have to
how do i know which fuse goes with what?? is there a diagram?? i did a search and no luck
At this point you take the car to the same shop that installed the door sill things and have them uninstall them. Pay for the service. Take your eBay door sills and place them carefully in the nearest waste receptacle. If you can't look at the fuse diagram and figure out which to check, or if you can't determine if a fuse is blown using an eyeball or volt ohm meter, then you have no business playing with these things.

I don't think he was doing the wiring. He said he took it to a shop.
Don't be afraid... be bold.
I wired my lights up to the dome light. which makes sense because it comes on when the doors unlocked/opened and off when the doors are closed and engine started.
Seriously, the shop shouldn't do installs if they didn't know that
Just adding my two cents... i would agree and take it back to the shop that did the install in the first place, and tell them to fix the problem or get an estimate of how much it would cost to fix and have them compensate you for damages. I would check the fuses first though... cause it could be as simple as that. If i were doing the install i would use a relay and fuse it... its a lot safer than just wiring it up to the dome light. A lot of the newer cars nowadays are picky and if you mess with them too much... things happen and it could cost a lot to fix. Problems that occur are due to poor wire runs... a relay and a fuse would definately minimize those chances of damages. Don't do it yourself if you're unsure. good luck... hope this helps. PM me if you need help... i got wiring diagrams for almost all the cars on the market and I can help you wire up a relay and fuses.
for the past 3 days Iv been in a crappy mood and regretting not taking the car to the toyota dealership and overpaying for the installation.
Today I had some free time so on my break I went to the parking lot, opened the owners manual, found the diagram under the fuse box and took everyones advice and pulled each of the fuses. I found a fuse that was broken and replaced it with the extra one located under the fuse box. All of the interior light that were not working before are now working!
Im in a much better mood and feeling grateful that it was only a broken fuse. I was thinking that the shop cut wires on mistake and had scheduled to take the car to Toyota on friday. Since i took friday off from work I was thinking about just taking the car to Toyota and having them re do the wiring??
what do you all think???
Also i will be going back to the shop that tried to do the installation on Sunday and demand money back.... Hopefully it will work cause $90 to have them try to wire them for on 3 different attempts, when everyone on TN says that it should not be a difficult job, is a awful lot in my opinion
hate pp at Toyota sometimes
i took my car in one time when my fog is out, she turned over n call her mechanic n tell him" ARE U GONNA TAKE THIS AFTERMARKET CAR( my car have tint n rims on at that time) IN?"
yeah sometimes stuff u put into the car the Toyota pp wont do it
