5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So I was wondering if anybody had experience killing some of the road noise in the Camry? I know it isn't too bad as it is but I know it can be better.
I have some experience doing this in my Tundra (I ripped the interior out and went nuts) and did that and it turned out great. In the truck I did the doors, the floor, and the rear wall of the cab. I got much better bass and an extremely quiet ride. I'm not looking to gut the interior in this car and put it every where this time though. In the Tundra I did the doors first and they probably made the biggest difference. Next I did the rear wall of the cab- it helped some but not as much as the doors did. The floor made a large difference too, but the doors were probably the best improvement and were the easiest to get to. This is why I'm thinking I'll just do the doors and the trunk in the Camry.
I'm planning on using some Dynamat Xtreme or Second Skin Damplifier Pro to do the 4 doors and the trunk on the Camry.
If anybody has experience doing sound deadening in different areas on the Camry and can say how much or how little it helped that would be much appreciated. I want to use a targeted approach this time instead of just covering everything. Also, anybody know about how much material this will take?

haha Kenny, you want him to rip everything out again? just to take pictures?
Agent WD, can you elaborate on the "rear wall of the cabin" and the "better bass"
Where exactly did you put the dynamat? How much improvement did you experience with audio? do you have the JBL system? aftermarket stereo/amp? etc.
Personally I felt the bass in the JBL could be a bit tighter, and I was considering a sound deadener for the back. was wondering if anybody had any positive experiences doing so?
Here's the how-to i used for my '02 Maxima with Bose The sound deadener made a WORLD of difference; mainly in audio quality, not necessarily road noise.
i did mine after i installed my system, go with second skin thats what i used. i did my front doors, rear deck, trunk lid, inner qtr panels like where the tailights go, the entire trunk floor, and last but not least i did under the rear deck underneath where the 6x9s go that really makes a difference too. i covered up all the holes and stuff. after i was finish the outside of the car had improvements of less rattling and the bass response in the car was louder and less rattling inside the car too. anyone who has a system in the gen 6 could tell you the rear deck is the most annoying rattling you will hear. lol

How many square feet did you use? Did you apply the material to both the inner and outer door skins on the doors?
What kind of sound deadening did you use? How much did all of this reduce road noise?
I have the sock JBL system so I'm not really worried about stopping rattles, just reducing road noise. I know I'll be able to get a bit better bass by sound deadening the front doors too though.

Well the "rear wall of the cabin" was back wall of the cab in my Tundra. I put some sound deadener and some open cell foam on the wall of the cab right behind the rear seats.
I got "better bass" by getting more of it. Again this was in my truck. At the time I didn't have a sub and had Infinti Kappa seapkers in the four doors powered by a 65 watts RSM x4 amp. Those speakers aren't known for having huge bass but when I turned it up I really didn't notice significantly more bass than I had with the stock amp and speakers- but it was TONS louder. Just a bit more of the weak muddy sounding stock bass with better mids and highs. After covering the inside and outside door skins with sound deadening I got the sort of bass I was expecting- strong and clear. It wasn't a replacement for a sub, but it was lots better.
The stock moisture barriers on the inside of the doors don't do very much to block the back wave from the speaker. So you get the front wave and back wave combining and mostly canceling each other out. It seemed the worst with the low frequencies. Replacing the moisture barrier with sound deadening (and putting sound deadening on the innermost door skin) went a long way.
I'm hoping I'll be able to get this same improvement in the Camry with the JBL. Granted it will only work on the front speakers. The rear speakers backwave fires into the trunk so I'm not expecting much difference from sound deadening the trunk. I'm doing the trunk for reduced road noise (I hope anyhow).

Stop chatting an get to it! When your done I will be by so you can do mine +1 Lots of photo's please
Well here are the results. I put Second Skin Damplifier Pro down in the trunk, under the rear seats, on the rear deck, and on the floor under the rear passengers feet. It was pretty easy to get the trunk and rear seat out. I was able to drop the road noise by about 2-3 dB in the car (measured over the same road). Subjectively it helped, it especially sounds quieter in the back and there is less tire noise coming from the back of the car. Not as big of an improvement as I was hoping for but it was fairly easy so I'm not disappointed. This would be a must do if somebody wanted to quiet down a louder aftermarket exhaust (I have a stock exhaust).
I'm going to do all of the doors next and I expect that will make a much more noticeable difference. I'll report back when that is done. If I have enough left over I might do under the front driver and passenger feat area. I'll also say there is a lot of sound damping material in the car from the factory.

I'm also considering using Second Skin or something similar to sound deaden the car. I've never worked on interiors so I have no idea how they look inside the doors, but would it be worth removing the existing sound deadening material (if any is present) and replacing it with the newer stuff to save on weight? Or is the weight difference not significant enough to worry about?
I'm primarily trying to kill road noise from the tires.

As you can see from my pictures the black stuff is the factory sound deadening. Don't bother removing it. Just put the Second Skin (or whatever you use) on top of it.
There is also a lot of factory cottony type insulation under the carpets too.
I'm trying to kill road noise in my vehicle too. That was my primary goal. So far with the trunk and rear seat area I have done that some. Doing the doors will help even more (and likely give more bass to boot).
I will say I'm happy with the Second Skin products. They seem to work well and are pretty easy to apply (compared to some of the other things I have used).
