5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
We are currently thinking of trading our 93' camry for a 08' 2.4L SE. Is there anything we should know about these cars? Any problems? I guy i work with has a newer camry (a V6 ..a think) and he had to put a brand new tranny in. Is this common on all camrys? Is the 08' SE a good all around car? Is anyone could help us uot, that would be greatly appreciated.
If you browse around the forum, you'll see that for the most part, there are no real major problems. Just some nitpicking and some complaints but thats normal. Not every car is perfect and some might have a perfect car while other cars would have problems that others might not. You need to take the car for a test drive and get carfax report or anything. Whether you get a Camry or a different car, that different car may have problems as well.
Its luck of the draw...kind of like the lottery. This is how I see it.
The car we are looking at is a 4cyl. We dont really need a 6cyl. We rather save a fuel and also we are hearing about tranny issues and more with the 6cyl. The car looks just like GT-R's camry and we like it. Is the V6 really needed for us? Our 93' camry that we have now is great!! 4cyl plenty for a daily driver for us.
unless you want the power then go for a i4. gas mileage is just about the same in real life to be honest. if u can though then get a new one as the 09s should be cheaper to make room for the 2010s and theres nothing like a new car that you take care of from day 1 unless you know the previous owner.

Well the car we are going to look at has only 40000kms on it. For the price we are looking at the V6 is around $5000++ more. And to my experience with MPG's and vehicles, 5mpg is 5mpg. I reserched the MPG and correct me if im wrong but the 2.4L gets 22--35 MPG and the V6 gets 18--28 MPG. These figures and people that post them on an eceonomy website. So maybe im wrong but 5++ MPG and $5000++ for a second car (daily driver for the wife) seems a little bit much for what we need...correct? And the 4cyl seem to last longer with the 4cyl camry i currently have.
But in the end it is your money, and preferences...like what was said above, test drive it...get comfortable with it and read up on it and you'll be fine.
V6 is more power, and really there's only 2-5mpg difference between the two..i'd go V6 for that added power when you need it...just my opinion.
The I4 is a bit sluggish for me, but then again all i really ever driven are V6+ cars..
I get about 24-25mpg on my V6. I do both highway and city driving.
Test drove the i4 and v6 and its night and day. v6 is much smoother and more power obviously. I have a heavy foot and if I got the i4, the amount of gas I use up just to get to the speed I want getting on the highway, mpg would be a lot less.
i get around mid 20s too with mixed city and highway but lately more city. i got low 30s when i drove to school more(more highway). i say find a good deal on a v6 because you will have a smile on your face everytime you touch the gas more.

Different people with different driving conditions and different driving habits.

WTH?! 35-37 on a v6? Highest I got was 29mpg and thats all highway going from NY to Hershey Park, PA
Thats what I thought. 37 MPG on a V6? Than the V4 should get what....45 MPG? I dont think so. Go search the fuel economy website and all the info and fax is there. But I'm happy with the 4cyl we have now so I'm assuming the new 08' 4cyl would be fine for what we need for a second commuting car. We don't need that extra power. We have a fully loaded Envoy with 280hp and many of power toys to take our power out on (snowmobiles, quads, and blown alcohol dragsters). But thanks for the info anyways guys. I was more wanting to know more about the 4cyl's. Is the tranny issue only on the 6 cyls?
