HID questions

Now before people start telling me to search or read the stickies.. I already have. I don't think what I'm about to ask has been covered, or at least covered much.

Now, I've read how it's recommended to retrofit or use the relay to draw power directly from the battery.

My question is that how many of you out there, who have chosen to switch HIDs without retrofitting, are using the HIDs directly plugged and played. That is to say, you buy the kit and not do anything else but plug it in directly via the existing harness and the purchased ballast. (Terminology may be used incorrectly, not sure but I think I've conveyed my point)

Also, where have you all been placing the ballast? I've seen someone remove their front bumper and slot it in somewhere there. But other than that.. the engine bay seems a bit cramped for the ballast.

Thanks.

My headlights had a mounting area for ballasts so I made an adapter and mounted the ballasts there.

I also powered them from the stock wiring w/o a harness. I did a retrofit though it doesn't make any difference in this regard.

Here it is, taken with my iPhone 3GSportivo.

Passenger Side Ballast mounting location

Passenger Side Bulb

Driver Side Ballast mounting location

My 6000K HID + 2500K Luminics Fogs

My 6000K HID + 2500K Luminics High Beam

I don't want to hide the ballasts too well, because I don't wanna have to remove the bumper just to replace the ballasts.

Ballasts are mounted on the frame rails and are secured by screws, and all connectors are secured with zip ties, and placed far away from water.

Ahh. The ballasts you have are much slimmer than what I have. I would be using a MTEC 6000k set. The ballast are pretty fat. Also, I have a 2010 Camry so maybe the engine bay is a little different, not certain.

I see you have a 2009, do you have any problems with the ballasts being visible when you take it into service under warranty. Do the technicians ever tell you you've voided warranty or anything?

Lastly, how is it holding up without using a relay. After reading through the sticky. I'm slightly scared about the drawing of power at the start up possibly doing some damage to the wiring of the car.

Thanks for all the help.

I had this for 5 months and works just fine.

Service tech didn't say anything about it.

Ah, yea.. I'm not planning on retrofitting if I do switch. As a result.. I'm having difficulties locating a spot to mount the ballasts.

Cool. Thanks for the help!

One last question, which method did you decide to pick for dealing with the squirrel spotters or did you not bother with that?

Thanks

I'll deal with that later.

Right now, I'm just running with the way it is.

Kenny, did you choose to retrofit, use a relay or are you running it as plug and play?

Also, where did you mount your ballasts if you didn't retrofit.

Lastly, which method did you pick to fix the squirrel spotter issue.

Thanks!

I've read through both those threads already, thank you.

What I asked though, was more like a poll... I wanted to know whether those not retrofitting are running their HIDs w/ the extra relay or just plug and play.

I'm also curious as to which method people prefer to delete the squirrel spotter issue. That thread mainly has people using the JB Weld + Tin Can method. I wanted to know how many are actually using that method as opposed to just pushing the flap down.
