5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I bought a used 2002 Camry XLE v6 just 3 weeks ago. It has 98K miles. I know Toyota recommends replacing the timing belt every 90000 miles, so I wonder if it was replaced when the car hit the 90K mark. I kind of hope it was since the car has apparently been taken good care of.
Anyway, I called a Toyota dealer to see how much it would run to check the timing belt, and they quoted $375 - t.b. cost + tax since the job is almost the same as replacing the belt. I suspect the belt has not been replaced, because there's no sticker on the cover, but I'm not sure.
So if I were to replace the belt would it be wiser to go to a Toyota dealer do do it or any mechanic would be able to do it?
Also while I'm still driving without replacement, I'd like to know if my engine (1MZ-FE) is non-interference one. If it's not, then I don't want to take any chances.
my cousin also bought a 2002 camry v6 se three weeks ago at 124k on odometer, the original owner told me he never replace the timing belt yet, so i ordered following at a preventive maintainance.
timing belt,
ps belt,
AC belt,
front and rear cam seals, (sign of leaking)
crank seals,
front and rear valve cover gasket,
water pump,
upper and lower coolant hose,
thermostat,
thermostat gasket,
6 spark plugs
egr valve gasket
throttle body gasket
total cost a little over $400 for all parts from bulter toyota at Indiana, free shipped
took me about 1 day to get all done, but at least now i feel safe and don't have to worry about being stranded unexpectedly at the worst possible location when the timing belt decide to break on me.
and towing the vehicle to the shop or home starting at $50 to $80 + mileage.
so i can't justify the cost when the timing belt break, even though it is an non-interference engine.

I wish I could do that on my own, but I can't. BTW, are all those part OEM or aftermarket?
It's a non-interference engine. I'd recommend getting a "complete timing belt job" that includes the following parts. You can use aftermarket or OEM, at the dealer or an independent mechanic. Your call.
Here is an old list from rockauto.com:
GATES TCK257 timing component kit $89.79
(timing belt plus two pulleys)
FEL-PRO TCS45890 crank seal $6.27
FEL-PRO TCS45889 cam seal set $8.55
GATES K060410 Alt/AC belt $13.09
GATES K040345 PS belt $8.61
ASCO/AISIN Part # 1610029085 water pump $61.79
Total ~$188 + shipping
If needed: FEL-PRO VS50471R valve cover set (with spark plug tube
seals) $30.79
