5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
After doing a lot of research, i placed an order for a set of Tanabe Medalion Touring catback, this set actually is for the is250 since they don't make particular model for Camry. But I confuse when the guy work for a muffler shop ask me if I want to remove the resonator or not, is the sound different with or without the resonator? any effective to the engine?
I saw Darkspark post about his Tanabe Medalion set up, he said the reason he switched to the other set up because the sound is not loud as he wants, but if I removing the silencer, will it improve the sound or anything
From my understanding, the resonator is basically a type of "resonation chamber" and not a silencer. It helps dissipate some of the vibration that can lead to exhaust drone generated by the exhaust from entering the cabin, but also quiets the exhaust note a bit.
If you want a slightly more muscular sound along with marginally better performance (the performance benefit is only really noticeable on a dyno) and don't mind exhaust drone in the cabin, remove the resonator. Otherwise leave the resonator on the car like most people do.
Whoa, so IS250 parts can really fit on Camry? I know the IS&Camry share V6 engines but I didn't know their exhaust pipings were similar!
On a side note, Thrawnis answered that question pretty well, PerformanceVSNoise/Vibration.
And I want to know more about this IS/Camry exhaust system compatibility stuff please.
Can't really say IS and Camry share same engine... Their fuel is direct injected... Ours is port injected... And not we do not share same exhaust. That's why the OP took it to the shop. You'll need to get it modified to fit the Camry.
To the OP. If you ordered a full cat-back, remove the stock resonator and use the resonator that came with the system. If not, you can pick up a universal one. A stock resonator will really quiet your exhaust but also kill any droning in the cabin. By going no resonator you free up the exhaust gases, giving your car a little more power.
Thank you so much for everybody's response. Yes, we do need some modification to install it, but not so complicated to do it. I searched but i can't find any sound clip of any camry with Tanabe Medilion Touring exhaust so if anyone have the setup on their camry please share, thanks
