Do i need to do anything to the ECU?

Ok, so my car is fixed and i put the new K&N intake on. Do i need to do anything to the ECU so that it doesn't freak when it begins to breath better? Toyota is saying that i would have to reconfigure the ECU to keep up with the new amount of air flow. Any comments guys? I really don't want another check engine light.

No you don't need to do anything. Over the next 10-30 miles, your ECU will re-train itself to deal with the intake change.

Unless you have a turbo, there is no more air flow/engine RPM than before. The MAF sensor measures the airflow and reports to the ECU.

If the intake cross section is the same area and shape as the factory, the MAF sensor is clean and operating correctly andthere is no MAF sensor upstream air turbulence, then there will be no change in the MAF output.

Your dealer/Toyota is wrong as long as there is no change in the MAF area.

If your check engine light comes on. Just disconnect the negative side of the battery and reconnect it. The light should be gone when you restart the car, as doing that resets the ECU.

If you are looking to see horsepower gain, there wont be since as njerald has already said the airflow will be about the same, the factory ecu will not know to inject more fuel to compensate the intakes ability to take in more air. What you will need is to get and tune a piggy-back ecu (ex. GReddy E-Manage) ontop of the factory ecu to see any noticeable gains. This is a must have if you ever decide to to do any more major engine mods. (intake/header/downpipe/exhaust). Otherwise back to your question, it shouldnt be a problem.

^ peach and gene's turbo setup have a piggyback ecu

dont listen to what the dealer says, they dont kno what they're talking abt, besides a drop-in filter wont do much (i have one too), you also dont want to touch the factory ecu if you still have powertrain warranty
