Camry 06, should I get washable engine air filter?

--update: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=311132
--update 2: maybe the question should have been reusable vs. single use filter.

Hi,

Should I get washable engine air filter? It costs more, but does anyone have experience with them, I mean, are they truely washable and the dirt all comes out?

I use to see Fram selling them and it doesn't cost that much, but lately, Kragen doesn't carry them anymore. They use to have one for my mom's nissan sentra.

Any brand you recommend? I want the in-expensive ones, so long as it gets the job done.

Thanks.

I really don't see the need for a poll on this topic.

Anyways, an engine air filter is something I wouldn't really skimp on especially when you consider that your engine 'breathes' in quite a lot of air when it runs.

I agree, no need for a poll.

If you had done a search you would have found countless threads on this topic, and what brands people are using.

Get the TRD or K&N and call it a day.

Washable engine air filter vs. one time use.

--UPDATE--
I don't understand why folks are insisting on TDR and K&N when the oil on the filter is a problem for the MAF. The more I think about it, the more I'm interested in getting NON-oiled washable filters, such as what FRAM use to carry. Look here regarding warning of using oiled washable filters:
http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...ota-said-dont/

--UPDATE 2--
Am I missing something, both 1sttoyotaparts and rockauto does not carry air filter for a 2006 Camry, V4?? I've sent an email to Carrie northridgetoyota.com

--UPDATE 3--
Anyone know of a brand of washable filters that does not have nor require oil on it? I just don't want any oil on mine. I've read it on other sites besides above that scares me away from it.

--UPDATE 4--
Still thinking.. still reading.

I searched and can't find anything about washable air filter. I posted previously but the thread is closed.

Here's the search, and the only washable filter that comes up pertains to cabin air filter.

It seems people prefer the regular engine air filters but what I want to know is why?

DIY Washable Cabin Air Filter

Appreciate a discussion on this. The way I see it, if a washable costs $52, then wouldn't it make sense to get the washable ones since a regular filter costs about $20? I did read that ceratin K&N filter comes pre oiled and it can foul the MAF, and that's not something I'd like. This is for a 2006 Camry.

For the record this was the closed thread: Camry 06, should I get washable engine air filter?

Thanks.

I've used K&N oiled air filters in all of my cars for nearly 20 years now. Unless you're a complete idiot you're not going to screw up your MAF.

I agree. The biggest mistake most folks make with using the K&N filter charger kit is not allowing the oil to dry before re-installing the air filter. Then if they do goo up their MAF they blame oiled air filters or go crying to their local dealership and the misinformation spreads like wildfire.

I agree. There is also a reason why TRD/K&N sells a cleaning/recharging kit. If oil wasnt needed, why sell it? If their selling it, there is a purpose behind it.

And speaking of kit, I need to clean mine.

http://fram.com/products/airFilters.php

FRAM is the only company I know that has washable filters. Even so, its designed to be washed 20 times and than you have to buy a new one. The amount of money you spent on replacing and buying the washable, you could have a permanent reusable K&N drop-in air filter. What sucks for you is that its a new product and they dont have it for your model.

I dont know how much FRAM is charging but if its $52 for it and you can only wash it 20 times before replacing, I'll spend $40-50 on a K&N that I dont even have to worry about replacing. Just clean, wait a couple of days and than put it back on the car. That is why you have a spare OEM or cheap air filter so you can drive around while the K&N is drying.

I have the K&N. I got 2 for the car. One for inside the car while the other one sit in the packaging.

When it's time to change, I put in the clean one and the dirty one I wash/clean/wash/clean/recharge/dry and than put it into the packaging to be ready for next use.

I wouldnt have done that. 1 K&N is enough and 1 stock OEM (clean or dirty). You're only using the stock for 1-2 days while the K&N is drying. I think thats just wasting an extra $50

I had K&N's for my Jetta and Taurus. Both were donated. I put the stock air filters back into the car and I'm trying to sell the K&N's. No one is buying them. The extra $50 used on the 2nd K&N could of been put towards other mods, gas or food.

I still keep my 3K-mile old stock filter in my garage.

You have to recharge the K&N every 30K-50K miles, right? I think I would've gotten a new car by the time I hit 30K.
