It's a weird comparison indeed as someone else said. However, I think the main reason for the comparison is the price. You can get a fully loaded Camry SE V6 for the same cost as a well loaded GTI. If you put things in perspective, you are getting so much more "car" for your money with the Camry.
Here in Canada, also it costs significantly LESS to insure a Camry instead of a GTI so that adds to your everyday costs. Not to mention how the GTI needs premium fuel...
The main point for swaying me into the Camry SE V6 back when I was in this dilemma in 2007 was that is was a faster car with all of the comforts, size and luxuries (and a nice JBL stereo). I've driven hatchbacks before and let me tell you that any car with a SHORT wheelbase is a disaster in the winter. A car with a long wheelbase resists spinning very well. Winter performance was an important factor since we do get a lot of snow here.
Finally, aside from the ripoff price of the GTI, I guess I did not want to be associated with the racer-type guys who usually drive 10 year old VW hatchbacks and try to race the random soccer mom in her minivan (and lose).
