5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
It's actually there today. I picked it up on Saturday because they could not get the parts or the person that works on the headliners out until today.
Also, after reading two of Njerald's recent TSB update posts, I'm going to have them check on those as well since it's going to be there anyways.
But we'll just have to see what happens here on out. Like I've said before, thank god I still have my warranty plus my extended toyota warranty for another 5 years!
I took mine in for a rattle in sunroof area last week. They noted a new noise was found after the fix. I waited and took it home. Now it rattles constantly like a seatbelt banging on the door. If I reach up and squeeze the frame of the opening it stops. They better fix it, it makes driving an irritation.

Honestly, I don't think it will every be completely fixed.
I took mine in 3 times, and while it's 95% better than it used to be, once in a while I still get a subtle, more quiet rattle. I just try to ignore it now since it's not nearly as bad as before.
Word of caution, however: TRIPLE check every that is attached to the roof if you do go in to have it repaired. I've had to have both sun-visors replaced (one of them had to be replaced again because the dealer eff-ed up), they put a hole in my headliner, and the rear seat dome light fixture is coming out (they had to special order that, so I'm still waiting for that to be repaired).
Honestly, if I had known all this would happen, I wouldn't even bother taking it in to be fixed... I would have traded the whole car in or sold it to CarMax or something...

I work for Toyota and part of the problem is the material quality. The interior materials that Toyota used in the Gen 6 Camry are some of the lowest quality materials ever used in a Camry. Yes, they are better than other brands. However, they are difficult to remove without causing damage. This is why the Camry sells for about the same price it did years ago.
I have not done this repair because of this. Mine only makes noise when it gets cold out.

My 08 camry se has been in the shop 3 times and still are not willing to fix with current TSB for the sunroof. There keeping the car tonight hoping that the sound will start tomorrow morning when its cold. Today I left it all day and they MOUNTAIN STATES TOYOTA Denver, Colorado tech said he could not do the TSB untill noise was noticed. Wow you would think on the 3rd complaint of sunroof noise that Toyota would step up and just fix the damn problem without waiting to hear it themselfs. I told the GM that do you really think I want you to rip the hole headliner down just to install a foam piece if there was no problem? The did finish the Oil Line recall, and pedal stuff, but neither of the TSB's I wanted. I'll let ya know in the morning about the conclusion.......

I would say the same thing to you that the dealer did. If they can't hear it, how do they know that a repair to be done fixed it?
Njerald....That's great but when there is a TSB that's addresses this exact issue don't you think that would be the next step......Njerald, It's kinda like Toyota telling you the customer that we can't fix your accel pedal untill we can make it stick or you show us its sticks! Just ponder that for a minute..........I'm sick of Toyota beating around the bush on these issues. This is my 6th Toyota and have never had issues like this every before.

First line in the repair procedure I read..............Confirm the noise.
Well....Both TSB's that I wanted done got done today folks. They started the camry this morning and noticed brakes that squeek when its cold and after a short test drive on a side street the sunroof finally made the clunking noise. The tech confirmed both and resurfaced front rotors and replaced brake pads, and of course did the Foam insulator in the sunroof. After picking up, I inspected the headliner for possible cuts, grease, and broken visors. At this time everthing looks okay. lets hope it holds well and have no more issues. I'll post some service reports a bit later.
iv had the knocking sound come from my moonroof ever since i can remember. Back in Dec 2009 i hit a curb going 40+ mph. I blew the front and rear driver side tires and up with a dent front driver rim. I also had to replace all my struts bc they were bent and its recommended to replace struts in pairs. ever since hiting the curb i have not heard a single sound from my sunroof. im guessing that the force in the impact did some shifting in the moonroof area, eliminating the sound. Its a bit extreme and im not suggesting going out and hitting a curb to fix the knocking sound, but i just wanted to share my story with you all.
Can someone let me know where they noticed this hole in the headliner? Also, describe the problem about the visors in more detail?
We test drove an 08 SE (32k miles) with a sunroof last week, and as we pulled into the dealership, we hit a bump and the car made a sort of "ping" noise. We were able to replicate the noise numerous times at a low speed, hitting a bump on, when turning. We couldn't exactly pinpoint where the noise was coming from and the salesman said he would have the service guys look at it.
I got the call today that they fixed the noise, saying that there was a TSB for sunroof noise and they basically inserted a piece of foam (as described throughout this post). I didn't actually hear a "rattle", but the salesman said he could not replicate the noise like we did the other night.
I am planning to buy this car this evening. What should I be looking for in this car after they made this fix?

Thanks for the help.
Honestly, I would look for another car. I still have nothing but problems with mine, but I just have to deal with it until I can afford to get something else. I will say this, after the 3rd time the dealer "fixed" my sunroof, it seems much improved, but occasionally there is a strange sound still. But, way better than previously.
I inspected it top to bottom, messed with the visors and everything: no problems. I drove the car all the way home, up and down windy roads, from 5 mph to 70 mph at some points, not a noise anywhere. The drive was about an hour so I really had some time to listen. There are 3500 miles left on the bumper to bumper warranty, so I'll be sure to be playing with the sunroof quite religiously until then.
Sorry to hear about your troubles. Did you ever consider taking your car to another dealer?
