5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Okay, so for the past several months I've been taking my car back to the dealer again and again for the sunroof rattling (when closed). They've applied the appropriate TSB, the noise came back, brought it back because of the noise, they couldn't replicate it, brought it back again, drove with the shop foreman, the sound came back. They assured me this time it was completely fixed as they contacted Toyota directly and obtained additional information.
But! The past few nights, the noise came back...not as loud as before, but noticeable and now with a slightly different sound to it, but definitely still coming from the same area. But here's the real kicker - yesterday while driving, my wife popped down the passenger side sun visor and put it to the side and the visor was slightly coming off. When I noticed it, she began to put it back to its normal position and it completely came out. Needless to say, I was pissed. And to add insult to injury, we noticed a small hole in the headliner underneath where the visor would be when not in use. Boy was I pissed.
I called the dealer and of course it was like 5pm last night, so only one guy was there. I drove in and he at least put the visor back temporarily but he said to bring it back when I can to re-evaluate the visors, the headliner and the sunroof noise.
I went ahead and wrote a long letter to Toyota corporate explaining how I've had nothing but trouble with this car and may seek legal counsel. I've had the dashboard rattle issue, the sunroof issue, the wrinkled rear leather seat issue, and I still occasionally have rattling or creaking noises from the center console area (where the shift knob is) but every time I bring the car to the dealer, go figure the noise in the center console isn't there so they can't do anything. Oh not to mention 4 times already they had to replace the clips in the gauge cluster bezel because they keep falling out (the 1st time I brought the car in, they said the clips weren't even in there from the factory!!). I'm glad I kept all the documentation for every time I brought the car in.
Anyways, I guess this more of a rant an rave kind of post but seriously, I'm getting fed up with this car and am so ready to get rid of it and get a Honda. My mom's new Accord is flawless!! But who knows, maybe one day Toyota will actually be able to fix everything. Anyone have any thoughts on what I can do, either through the dealer, Toyota, or if I really should look at talking to a lawyer? Thanks!
Oh just for reference my car is an 07 Camry SE V6, fully loaded, leather, navi, etc. So I can't understand why a near top of the line Camry could have so many problems!
Just wondering what you were told or how the wrinkled rear seat was fixed? I work for one of the companies that builds the seats toyota. I know the leather seats do have what you would think is wrinkles but those are there by design in the back of the seat. Now the cushion shouldn't of had any wrinkles at all.
I had mild rattling from the moodroof. I was going to take it into the dealer and get it fixed under warrenty, but i read on the fourm that in order for the TSB to be applied, alot of things had to be taken out of my car to get the the problem ex. seats and ect. also i read that it cause more problems trying to get the rattling sound fixed. so, i never took it in for repair. Now im 37,000+ miles and the rattling sound in getting louder and happening more and more. When ever there is uneaven pavment or a pot hole, or a speedbump or when im pulling into a driveway........

Well, I'll be honest, it was about 2 years ago I had the leather seats replaced so I don't quite remember how wrinkled they were. But the dealer replaced them per the TSB that was out for it, so it was a known issue.

I wonder if i should have taken it in for the TSB
I can tell you this... my dealer did apply the TSB twice and the sound is still there, so either my dealer is not doing it right or the TSB does not accurately fix the problem. Also, depending on your dealer, you may have other issues like I'm having...holes in headliner, sun visors falling out, etc. But the noise was just unbearable that I had to do something about it.
Not good news, I wonder if while working on it they damaged the headliner.
If their is a TSB on it maybe the member who put it off could still get it done.
Though it sounds like a root canal procedure that doesn't go right.
I would only guess it was damaged while they were "fixing" it since the headliner does need to be dropped or removed in order to get to the whole sunroof assembly.
Seriously, if I could I would get a different car, but I had a major change in income happen to me in the last few months so I simply can't front any down payment or pay the difference between what the car is worth and how much is still owed on it. So is life I guess.... Thank god the car still is under warranty.
On my 08 LE I had the sunroof rattle done and then checked. Both times the rattle came back in a couple of days - on cold days on side streets. I now think it is the headliner, near the driver's side of the windshield. I could push up near the visor and stop the rattle. I'm guessing the headliner fit snug when reinstalled after the TSB and check and then loosened up. I'll take it back when it becomes cold again here in Atlanta.
I've had no problems with the Service Department, by the way. They are eager to please.
Get the dealer to inspect the sunroof weatherstripping...i have a 2003 ES300 and my sunroof would rattle when closed due to the weatherstrip rubbing against the body...i replaced the weatherstrip, and no issues since.
As far as the visor goes, thats common. the gen 6 visors are clipped on instead of screwed in like on older toyotas, so the clips can come loose over time. Sadly, you cant just replace the clips but you have to replace the whole visor. I know you can remove the visor and bend the metal clips to make it reattach securely again, but its always going to keep coming loose until it has been replaced.

I will definitely mention that to them when I bring the car back this Friday. I can't believe Toyota could make such a poorly built car. I guess that's just how it is nowadays when every company is trying to cut costs somehow.
yea, seriously... my older gen5 camry had no major issues and was japanese built. This newer one I have is made in Kentucky. That's probably my FIRST problem.
Anyways, bringing the car back to the dealer tomorrow to inspect the sunroof again, and demand they fix the hole in my headliner and replace both sunvisors.
I have a 2009 and my moonroof rattles all the time. I refuse to fix it as everyone seems to report the problem returns.
My car has been a absolute nightmare. I think I am going trade it soon. At only 10,000 miles I have a warranty repair history that could wrap around my entire car. In fact, I still have outstanding issues I am waiting for parts on.
