5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So my sister is driving the 07 Camry and says that the head unit display sometimes doesnt show or just gives black boxes on the display. She says that this happens when she parks it outside in temperatures of 90-100 degrees. Would that be the problem or would I need to get the head unit replaced?

I had that problem on my 07 Camry in all kinds of weather. The dealer never could duplicate the problem when I brought the car in, but took my word for it and replaced the audio unit under warranty. I hope her car is still under warranty because the unit is very expensive.
My 09 Camry is doing the same thing, no display when hot. Once the A/C starts cooling the car down it will flash characters for a while. Then it works fine. The radio always works, just no display. Dealer said I would need to leave it with them so they could see it. I said it has to be hot and it's intermittent. It may happen today or a week from now. I will leave it with you if you give me a loaner car. He said bring it in and they would look at it. He looked at it (not realy) and ordered a new one. He then admitted to seeing these radios have problems. He said these things cost a lot and the dealer gets charged if they order one and the bad one tests fine.
This is not an uncommon problem with the Gen6 Camrys. I had the same problem and eventually got the head unit replaced under warranty. Hopefully you still have a warranty remaining, and if so, be prepared to replicate the problem to your service guy at the Toyota dealership. If you can't replicate the problem, they will not replace it.
Keep a digital camera with you (or use your cellphone camera) for the next time it happens. If you can get a picture of it your dealer might take that as proof.
common issue...if i had a dime for every time i have replaced a camry radio (gen 6 mostly) at work id be rich as hell....toyota oem radios BLOW and are extremely prone to failure...my ES's cd changer is busted ATM....id take it to the dealer and try and get them to replace it for you...toyota has TSBs out on alot of them for issues with the display or CD player operation.
Had same issue; no characters, or asian symbols, static, the lights would flicker at night, etc. I recorded it with my blackberry one day just in case I got the run around but obviously I wasn't their first so they replaced the unit under warranty.
I had this problem. I dont think it was related to temperature however. The first time it happened to me I was driving from Irvine to San Jose at night. Eventually i started getting blank displays when I was switching discs. I just ended up driving to the dealership while the display was blank so I could show it to them since it was so intermittent.
just got it fixed. They didn't even look at pics, just asked me what was wrong and told that I researched it. Too bad they didnt put the panels as flush as it first came out from factory so it looks a little off.

They replaced the radio under warranty, but broke the storage door below it. They ordered a new door, but I have not been able to get back due to all the flooding here in GA. Needless to say I am not happy with them.

Same thing happens to me in Houston heat. Even with a sun shield over the dash. The radio screen with display after the electronics cools off.

I've had that same problem starting the day the warranty expired. Sometimes the controls on the radio don't work either, but the ones on the steering wheel still do. It usually gets fixed by turning the car off and back on, but it also helps if I tap on the display with my finger. Extremely annoying! It's the only problem I've had. And I love the sound - so it must be a good radio. I thought it must be a loose wire, so I was going to disassemble it and reseat the connectors. If I need a new radio, then I'm XXXX out of luck! My money goes to beer.

It was a warranty item. I got a new radio, but when they installed it they broke the door below. They ordered a new door and a second trip they replaced that. Have you tried getting it repaired under warranty?
IIRC the panels never fit flush on her car to begin with Aaron. There was always some play one way or another when I was in that car. If it bugs you or your sis that much, bring it back to the dealer and tell them to align it "correctly" or as best as it can go
