5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My sister has a 2006 CE Model 5 Speed Manual. On Sunday her car stuttered while cruising 35MPH and the steering wheel locked, she pulled over and restarted the car. After the restart, the car through a CEL. The car then started to shake while idling and it would randomly go from 700-1500 RPM. The car would stall if trying to give it any gas.
The car was towed to Toyota this morning where they diagnosed the throttle body as being STUCK OPEN. They told my sister that the entire throttle body needed to replaced and they want to charge her $1500 for the whole ordeal.
Has this problem happened to anyone before? I tried searching but had no luck finding anything regarding this problem for the newer camrys. Is there perhaps a DIY on replacing the throttle body or can anyone point me in the right direction?
He's right. Order it on-line and take it to a buddy or an independent shop. Its an easy job. The throttle body is only held on by 4 screws, and a few vacuum hoses

Its been a few weeks so you probably already paid to fix it - but Luna2 is right, it might have just needed a cleaning (for $3 for a can of cleaner rather than $1500.) You dont say whether you've got the 4 or the V6, but i have the V6 and let me tell you, the inside of the throttle body gets filthy after only about 20,000 miles. The 4 cylinder engines are even worse for this because the IAC (idle air control valve) on most of them is right underneath the butterfly and it too, gets filthy, which can make the car not start, not idle, or run bad all the time, depending on where it is stuck at.
throttle bodies do of course wear out from time to time, because they are aluminum - and the portion inside where the steel butterfly touches them gets worn over time, allowing too much air in at idle. This is especially so for a manual transmission car due to all the throttle opening and closing going on. But for a car as relatively new as a 2006 camry to have this condition either means its got hella miles on it (way over 100,000), or the TB is physically broken or cracked. I suspect the mechanics might be trying to jack your sister on the repair bill.
www.topix.com has a world of info also with really angry folks paying upwards of $1500 for a throttle body replacement at low mile. Did mine myself without a manual for $250. Just found one from a wrecked car.
One and a half hour job. If you get a dianostic of P2112 it means your TAC (Throttle Actuator Control) permanetly connected to your throttle body fialed. Try cleaning it first with throttle cleaner. But if that does not work find a salvage yard. I was so upset that I bought several (one for my trunk) so if you can't find one let me know. If you have a 2004 - 2005 4 cylinder Camry. Actually I think it fits the RAV4 too. Good luck. Tommy
