Has Anyone Tried YellowBox?

Seeing my speedo reads 5MPH faster than what I'm going, I am in the mood to recalibrate it. It seems YellowBox may be my answer but in e-mailing them they want to know if the speedometer is hall effect or inductive coil in order to send me the right product. I haven't had the money to go to the mechanics and ask about checking the wires or whatever since I don't know where it is located. So anyone have any tips or advice?

What year is your car?

The gen6 averages the pulses from each of the 4 wheels and that ECU sends average that to IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), which is buffered to other devices. So you may need a unit that reads the actual pulses and "subtracts the overage" to make the "spedo" read properly. The one I saw was programmable.

There is one out there, don't remember where......

YellowBox supposedly recalibrates the speedo but more information would be helpful. Thanks for the help so far Luna.

Mine reads 3 MPH fast, and I've seen others mention this as well on the gen 5.5.

I looked at the specs for the "Yellow Box", it looks like it would work. The install connections are basic and for a motorcycle, but are doable. If I were to install one, I would install it behind the glove box. The connector that has the speed signal from the ABS Skid ECU (mounted under the hood) first appears on the inside, at connector AE6 pin 6 in the glove box area. I would still have to locate the (clean) power source and ground connection point(s). Plus this area is dry and is well protected.

So, you don't have the money to go to a mechanics to check wires but want to buy a yellowbox instead and install it (from your words you might need help with that at some cost)....to correct for a 5MPH offset?

How about simply remembering true speed is "-5" and call it a day. Works for me everyday.

+1. -(2-3) mph for me.

Odometer within 1% though.

Personally, I want my speedometer and odometer to reflect my true mileage. Even a 5mph difference makes a big difference over the course of the car's life.

1% @ 60 mph = +o.6 mph
2% @ 60 mph = + 1.2 mph
3% @ 60 mph = +1.8 mph
4% @ 60 mph = +2.4 mph
5% @ 60 mph = +3.0 mph
6% @ 60 mph = +3.6 mph
7% @ 60 mph = +4.2 mph
So a speedometer reading 61 mph when you are actually doing 60 mph is just under a 2% error.

The following is from ME manual page 39:

Reference: mph (U.S.A.)

Chassis dynamometer indication Acceptable range
20 mph 20.0 to 23.0 mph
40 mph 40.0 to 43.5 mph
60 mph 60.0 to 64.0 mph
80 mph 80.0 to 84.5 mph
100 mph 100.0 to 105.0 mph
120 mph 120.0 to 125.5 mph
140 mph 140.0 to 146.0 mph
160 mph 160.0 to 166.5 mph
NOTICE:
Tire wear as well as over or under inflation
will cause errors.
(2) Check the deviation from the acceptable range
of the speedometer indication.

Toyota’s speedometer indicator specification, for maximum (+ only) error is (rounded up) 6.67% at 60 mph. (So any (–) error is an immediate cause for a speedometer replacement IF all other parameters are correct.)
Note: I read my vehicle speed via the DLC3 (OBDII) connection with my computer, compared to the speedometer needle, the delta was +3.0 mph. Further checks indicated a higher delta when slowing down, rather than the normal accelerate to the measured speed. My computer speed reading was correct when tested on a measured 3 mile flat surface road, on cruse and a stop watch. End result, within Toyota Specifications and no correction was made.
The dealer can test the speedometer needle error with the Intelligent Tester by entering the following menus:
Diagnosis / OBD/MOBD / METER / ACTIVE TEST (From ME manual page 39)

Wow nice information but I checked up on my dealer and they said it would require a new instrument cluster because 5 MPH was within their acceptable range. :\
