5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My '10 did not come standard with remote locks, however when I asked the dealer he said that the car was programmed for it, all I would need to do is to buy the key with the buttons. He said it was $250 for the key. Would I be able to buy any key designed for gen-6 Camrys and be able to have them cut and program it?
Also, I have seen some keys that have a trunk release button, would my car have a solenoid already built in for that?

Yours is the one I was interested in getting. If everything works for it I'd be happy to buy it. I don't want to end up with those little scratches all around my door handle from trying to unlock it at night.

Keyless entry was not included in the options with my car, it's a base model.

PM'd. All you have to do is get it cut and programmed. My ignition is really sensitive. It wont turn any key whether its cut by locksmith or from dealership. Gone through 2 keys and gave up. Got a new blank key and buttons work.

When I was looking for my Camry, every dealer we went to didn't have the remote/key, but only the valet key (which doesn't even open the trunk!). If someone is going to lose a key, it would be the valet key. When I asked about it, every dealer said it was the only key they got with the car.
I'm convinced it's a scam to get more money out of people. I just about walked away from a deal because of no remote/key. We ended up getting one free and the second for $100 (as opposed to $250x2), but I still feel scammed. Cars should come with fully functional keys, end of discussion.

That's strange. I'd tell them to include both master keys plus the valet key or no deal. When I bought my Camry the sales guy couldn't find the second set of keys + remote so he was going to order me another set free of charge..but it was actually in the glove compartment.

Are you 100% sure this will work? Because Southeast Toyota Distributors lists part number 00016-32901 "Keyless Entry System" for MSRP of $116.96. This is a Toyota part, with instructions that I've looked at online.
It is "For Camry Base models and Corolla Base, CE and LE models.
Keyless Entry System. Parts include main harness, hardware bag, 3 button keyless entry FOB and Main Keyless Entry/Security Module. Note: For vehicles with power door locks and NOT FOR INSTALLATION ON VEHICLES WITH FACTORY KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS."
I bet this is what you need to get keyless on a base model or CE.

About the only difference between the CE/Base and LE is the remote locking function and power drivers seat, right? So why do we seem to have recurring threads on how to retro fit power locks and how to get more power out of the underpowered I4 engines? This foolishness drives me nuts. Do people never take a test drive?? A year after the deal is made, folks can't tell you how much they paid for the car, but they can bitch and moan about what the car does not have on it. So it was too expensive to buy the other options? Then you can't afford it. Buy a fully decked out Kia.

Well I'll find out soon enough and I'll let you know when I take it down to the dealer, I'll let you know what they tell me.

The only one bitching and moaning is you, why bother posting?

That is correct (the differences between base and LE), but I think the big issue is that some people don't want to spend about $1,200 or more on an LE to get keyless entry. They don't care about the power seat, so they are looking at putting in keyless, since it is pretty cheap to do.

A short test drive is not good enough. What ppl really need to do is rent it for 1 week and drive it like they own it.
It's my right to bitch and moan. I bitch and moan about my car not having a hitch but that doesn't mean I want a pickup truck that do have a hitch.
"fully functional keys" = key that can function with the lock. If base on the way you said it than a really fully functional key is the keyless.
Anyway, I think the best is go after market with all the extra functions like remote start / notify you when the car alarm go off / etc.
