master key help!!

My son managed to spill pancake syrup all over my 2007 Camry master key this morning. I gently wiped it off, but each time I used it today more syrup seeps out of the buttons. Everything still seems to work. Any suggestions?

Open up the remote/key (depending on if you have the combo key or not) and separate the circuit board from the casing, etc. Remove the battery and put aside. Then get a small bowl (or a sink) and fill with warm water and a small amount of detergent. Using a soft bristle toothbrush, hold the components in the soapy water and gently scrub (except for the casing... that you can scrub as hard as you want).

Then rinse thoroughly under clean water and allow to dry well. A hair dryer on low heat can be used to speed this up.

Once done, put the battery back in (after rinsing it quickly under water and drying with paper towel) and re-assemble the remote/key. So long as you do all clean all this with the battery removed and you make sure it is dried completely, the remote will be perfectly fine.

When drying the water I suggest putting it in a case of dry rice for 24 hours because water + electronics are a bad combination if there is live electric charge.

If he's removing the circuit and all that is left is the casing, no need to put it in rice.

No need to put in rice or anything like that mate. Once you take the batteries out, you can wash it all you want and dry it on a dish rack, hair dryer, etc. For argument sake, once you remove the batteries, the moment the remote hits the water, or even when your hand touches the PCB, it will lose all of its very small charge.

Thanks for the help. I disassembled it and discovered the battery component was syrup free, just the front of the key mechanism was "sticky". I washed all of the parts and let them dry in front of a dehumidifier for several hours. I re-assembled the key and everything works and my hands no longer smell like "Mrs. Butterworth's".

Not gonna say that look rice?

I would have suggest using an old toothbrush to clean. It's more gentle on the plastic.

Cant clean if you cant reach the inside. With syrup, its sticky. So using a toothbrush, you're just brushing it all over the place.

Sorry, I should have been clearer... I mean after taking off the casing and cleaning it in water, use the tooth brush to scrub so the casing won't receive any scratch.

LOL. It's not like the casing of the remote is a piano black finish. You could use a dish scourer and still won't damage the plastic. General wear and tear would cause more scratches than anything.
