Anyone else find the camry steering too heavy and unpredictable?
As a previous honda accord owner, I'm beginning to regret getting the camry because of the steering feel. Don't get me wrong, I love the smooth engine and everything, but the steering is driving me nuts.
Somewhat numb yes, but unpredictable only when I hit a patch of water I didn't see and start understeering. The power assist is variable; it's heavier at higher speeds so it's more stable and easier at low speeds to help in low speed maneuvers like parking.

heavy steering = lots of effort required to turn the wheel
this is normally a trait of high-performance cars to allow the driver to be able to feel the road more and get feedback.
Camry is heavy? Everyone has their own preference and definition of "heavy".
Compared to my fiancee's '03 Accord and my '95 Taurus, Camry is a little heavy but does not require a lot of effort to turn the wheel. My '02 Odyssey isnt even heavy. Probably the same as the Camry's. But my sister had a '99 Jetta and that steering wheel was a biotch to turn. I sometimes need two hands to turn the wheel. Her new '10 Matrix isnt hard to turn. My '84 Buick LeSabre was a tank and light on the steering wheel. Driving my father-in-laws Mercedes 340D (diesel) has a little heavy steering.
So you go figure, a minivan is the same as the Camry but a compact car has a heavy steering wheel.

I was referring to the steering "feel"
And the Camry's steering is light, numb and uncommunicative, compared to a lot of the other car's I've driven.
So yes, it's anything but heavy.

If anything Camry steering is light. Feels like you're floating. I test drove accord and camry and I liked the steering on accord. It takes some more effort to steer and you feel more in control. However, there's no way I'd take the accord engine over toyota. I have an SE and I changed the rear sway bar and it helped some of the handling feel. That's why I went with the camry. Can't really do much to improve the engine...
My steering is really light to turn, but then again I do weight lifting :p
In my opinion though, the steering is just right. It's something in which you can adapt to and provides just enough turning assistance whilst maintaining the feedback required when going on a hard mountain run.
