5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I was wanting to surprise my Mom when she comes home from vacation with a remote start in her car for those cold Chicago winters. I'm not sure exactly where to start.
Is this something I can tackle myself with my brother, or am I better off paying for it somewhere?
One thing I know I want is to have the remote start, lock, and trunk button all on one dongle.
Thanks.

There has been threads on remote starts. For something that requires a lot of wiring, I 100% suggest taking it to a shop. Not Best Buy or any of those electronic shops. I'm talking about a professional shop that deals with audio and alarms. Go to viper.com's website and look for authorized sellers and installers. This way, you're covered under warranty as well. A true installation requires soldering wires and hiding it well. Not splicing and crimping wires together.
You will need a transponder bypass (XK05) unless you're willing to give up a valet key. XK05 tricks the computer into thinking a key is in the ignition and generates a code. Aftermarket alarms all come with remote that has unlock/lock, aux (trunk, windows, etc.) and remote start.
I have the factory remote starter get to retain the factory remote. Nice fit and finish bit that fact it shuts off when you open the door or hit un lock not a fan but with the warranty on the 2010 still i had to stick with factory and since it is covered under the warranty since toyota installed then the better. Not the best option but defiantly functional
I had Viper 5701 with PKALL bypass on my GEN5 with professional installed. If you do not know what you're doing, I would suggest have the pro install it, if you send the wrong voltage wire to the wrong wire, you may fry the computer and that is a major cost $$$$. For a simple remote start/security still take to pro for at least 3hrs. If you do get the pro install, make sure he teach the remote starter as tach not voltage sensing, this would be a major problem if you ever live up north way cold in the winter, and your CCA on your batter does drop voltage when you remote start, this will result in a start and stop by it self within mins. due to the voltage sensing setting, the system does give you choice of tach or voltage sensing setting, if the pro installer came from up north, they more than likely set it at tach sensing, this will sense your engine rpm when it run, voltage sensing is reliable on your car voltage, and it not a constant number, especially in cold winter, when it change it will shut the engine off. So having to find a pro installer in your area, making sure he know what he doing, and not ruining your car.
DEI is a well known company that made: Viper, Clifford and Python, some of their high end system with 1 mile range 2way remote. So if you own either of these Viper, Clifford and Python, you more than likely own DEI products, they using the same brain units, just label different and different remote jacket. This will allow many dealers on the same street selling different products that all.
A word about the bypass: XK05 is problematic, they sometime need to re-program which not a happy thing to see, when you can't remote start the car.
PKALL is a simple bypass and reliable, Idatalink is made by CompuStar, and it one of the best that the pro preferred out there, as easy to program/reliable more than the PKALL.
I had the Viper 5701 for almost a year, and love it, I had it with the two DEI T530 windows automation, when arm/remote start the car, it roll all windows up, or I can vent all windows with a single touch of the remote, and another nice feature is, a one touch all windows down on driver side master switch.
Well, I hope this won't be a boring reading for you guys.
TT,

You can start by researching local shop who to radio/alarm installs... usually if you buy from the shop, they discount labor/install
it's your best and safest bet since it's your mom's car and not yours

TT,
I had my 5701 for over a year and have no problems at all. XK05 causes no problem for me.
