5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2006 Camry which just turned 100,000 miles. But this problem started the last week. When I drive the car for the first time in the morning. I can drive and stop with no problem below 40 mph. But once the car has reached a speed of 55 -60 mph and the over drive has kicked in. During the first full stop after the over drive was engaged. When you get down to almost the stop the transmission makes a big "clunk". It might be the shift from 2nd to 1st. Usually only the first full stop. Doesn't matter if you go 2 miles or 10 before your first complete stop. It makes the clunk. After that it shifts beautifully. Any ideas as to what could be causing this would be appreciated. I'm thinking it has to do with the overdrive because it doesn't happen until it's been engaged. Thanks,

There is a TSB out that my mechanic says fit the description of the problem with the transmission to a T. But it's only covered under the 6yr/60000 miles powertrain warranty part. Well we have 100,000 miles so it doesn't qualify. Does anyone have a ball park figure on what it would cost at a toyota dealership to replace the transmission?
Thanks
But the dealer said they do not tear down transmissions but replace them. A rebuilt transmission from Toyota installed is $4099.00 plus tax. The bulletin description doesn't sound like they have to remove the transmission. It sounds like the solenoid assembly can be accessed through the transmission pan.
If your vin number is lower than the ones listed on the TSB. Then your car most likely is affected. But only if your car shows the symptoms. And what gets me is the TSB is dated 4/15/2008 but to include the 2009 Camrys. So there was a problem they knew about but they sold them anyhow.

I don't know. Do they use the same model engine and transmission? If they do. Then I should think they "should" be included. But most likely won't be. It's too bad. I love my Camry. It's been a great car. But I can't afford that repair at the moment.

Yeah I believe it was the same engine and trannsy--it's the same generation Camry.
Is you car at least driveable until you can get it fixed?
Well. It moves along alright. But once you slow down to a stop. It does that clunk. But only once or maybe twice. And then it's fine for the rest of the day. If it starts to happen more freqently. Then I'll have to stop driving it. My local mechanic doesn't do transmission work but he's looking to see if he locate someone he knows and can recommend to do the valve assembly install if the Toyota dealer won't. I have to bring it to the dealer on Thursday to have them diagnosed it for $94.00.
Also. I don't know if I can justify paying $4099.00 plus tax to have a car with 100,000 miles on it fixed. I loved this car. The only things i've replaced in 100,000 are one new set of tires. Oil and filters. 2 sets of wiper blades. So if I decided to get a new car. Does Toyota use these same engines and transmissions in other makes? Like the Carolla or the scion XB? What about the matrix. I certainly won't buy the Camry seeing this TSB includes 2009 Camrys.
