5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hello TN. I do not know anything about oil changes and I have always brought my car out to Speedee, but I have read that many people prefer Mobil 1 Synthetic for their vehicle, so what I am planning to do is to buy the oil & filter and have Speedee change it for me.
I have a 2009 I4 and I live in California, so the weather should be cooling down soon. Should I buy 5W-20 or 0W-20 for my Camry? I know that Speedee usually uses 0W-20 conventional oil. Also, is there only one type of filter or is there a specific size or type that I will need to find for my car?
Use the recommended. V6 engines recommend 5W30 and the I-4 recommends 0W-20 (if i remember correctly, I don't have an I-4).
The dealer also does not overcharge (generally) on oil changes - you may save a few bucks at JiffyLube or Speedee or whatever but it's hardly worth the lack of paper trail IMHO.
Either weight, synthetic is not required and is a waste of money unless you are racing or going over 5,000 miles between oil changes. If you want to pay $8-14 extra per oil change, then use synthetic. 0W20 has not been available in dino oil.
Buy Toyota filters (about $4 each delivered in lots of 10 on EBAY).

If you do like Njerald says, your going safe. With my Camry, I change the half synthetic 10 w 40 oil and filter every 10000 miles.
No problems at all.
I don't know how cold your winters are, but here its never getting colder than about - 12 degrees C.

Good to know. Thank you.

In any event, stay away from the Jiffy Lube joints for as long as the engine is in warranty and let the dealer do the job. If they do it right it's about the same money and you don't have to grumble about anything. If they foul up, they buy you a new engine. If anything happens to the engine that is remotely related to lubrication you have a paper trail that can't be disputed.

New car should be using dealership recommended oil, if u r rich and want to use Synthetic Mobil 1 oil, thats fine.
Doesnt matter race or not race, Cylinders need to work to roll your vehicle right ? Synthetic oil actually extend your engine life and maintenance of your engine performance, but it not neccessary when your engine still new.
I recommend engine should use Synthetic Oil if they are 100,000 miles or higher.
( Dont tell me its the same between normal oil and synthetic, using Synthetic, you'll feel the real power and the real different. PLUS, normal oil get dirt at 3-4k miles, Synthetic Oil can last over 5k miles) and Yes, Mobil 1 and Amsoils are the best !
For transmission fluid (oil), Deal is the one you should get.
