2003 4cyl engine rattle

My wife's car is a 2003 Camry 4cyl. 131k mi. I had previously had the head job done due to valve seal leakage (smoke at start up). All has been well for a while. Now last week the CEL came on and the code was P0016, the mechanic that pulled the code said most of the time when the cam/crankshaft code shows up the car would not start/run. It seemed to be doing fine. He cleared the code to see if it reappeared or may have been a fluke. It wasn't a fluke......Sunday (the 25th) the CEL came on again and the code was the same, still running ok. Yesterday my wife told me that it seemed to making a rattle noise, popped the hood and at hot idle all was quiet, but when she rev'd it up a little there was a definte rattle that appeared to be coming from the pulley/drive area of the motor. Called a service writer/mechanic friend of mine to come over and we checked it out, he thought it might be a rod by the sound over the phone, but after checking thinsg out, he ruled out a rod issue and feels like it is the timing chain slappiing or either I have a lifter that is stuck.........I do not have a way to record it for anyone, but does this sound reasonable?......it is currently sitting in my garage until I decide where to have it towed, b/c it surely does not sound like it needs to be driven. any ideas or opinions???

I would check your intake manifold. There is a baffle inside the intake which comes loose and makes a rattleing sound. Toyota even issued a TSB for this.

...hey, i've noticed that when the we drive the car, and are stopped on a either an incline or decline, while the brake is depressed, the engine starts to rattle extensively....

If we toss the car into park, the engine rattle appears to lessen.
Car is an 2002 4cylinder w/ 135k miles.

We just had our brakes changed about 1000 miles ago... Any ideas?

Gen6

Intake manifold noise does not set a DTC.

P0016 is either mechanical (timing chain has stretched or jumped a tooth) or electrical (ECM is bad)...........

w/o a DTC is could be the intake manifold.

did you replace your air filter lately? I just had the engine rattle pretty bad at idle yesterday after replacing the air filter. the air filter compartment was not fully closed and the screws were not properly tightened but after fixing that the rattle went away. could be as simple as that. hope this helps someone experiencing the same thing.
