Before you go with the diagnosis of a "rebuild needed" make sure you've eliminated silly problems like a badly adjusted shifter linkage. You can get docs at http://www.camrystuff.com/ - the manuals there will show the correct shifter adjustment process.

The manuals there also show how to R&R the trans - Section 40, around page 10. It's an unpleasant enough task, but not horribly complex. Just make sure you have the right jack stands and tools to properly support the parts as you remove pieces of the drivetrain.

+1 with Frodo65.

Besides that you might want to drop the pan, replace the strainer, clean the pan and use a High Mileage ATF first. I think many can be used in place of T-IV fluid, which is most likely what you have in there?

Check with your local Transtar Industries for manual/parts.

Thanks for the help with some of the reference documents. I purchased a Chilton 200-2006 service manual but it does not show the "transaxle" in detail.
again, if you can show me a better way, im listening
thank you.
