2002 Camry atf strainer

I changed my atf, cleaned pan, magnets, new gasket. The dealer told me no need for new strainer. Just wash in parts cleaner then wash atf through it.
Should I have replaced the strainer as I saw some metal flakes in wash out the and do you check the fluid level with the engine running?
Thanks.

check ATF level with engine running,
check when the engine is cold, and the dip stick should be at cold mark, then once the engine warm up, check dip stick again, should be around the hot mark.

strainer is not much, like $30 or $40, if you feel you need a new one, replace it,
but it is nothing more than a mesh screen, unlike the oil filter, it can be clean off.

Yes, you should have replaced it. You can't effectively clean a screen in a casing, because fluid takes the path of least resistance.

You check the level with engine running at operating temperature on level ground. Preferable a few different times, just in case.

The Fram kit looks like:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=55973

Can't say I see the screen/filter from this angle. This should also have a cork-rubber gasket with it. For some reason they no longer show it.

The Beck Arnley kit on the other hand, looks like a filter media that requires periodic replacement (~15K miles):

So did you have a screen or filter in the casing?

Thanks John,

I looked at it and it had a felt liner on either side and apparently a mesh screen in between.

I wish I had replaced it because there were 3 bolts I had trouble removing and replacing on the pan because of the frame and don't really want to pull it off again soon.

Is there a good website for parts?

Thanks bronzemaxell.

You do nice work. I might do the same with the fog lights.

Is there a good website for toyota parts that you like?

Besides online Toyota dealers, you can check rockauto.com if you don't mind aftermarket filters. Or you can check with your local Transtar Industries transmission parts warehouse, they're quite competitive:
