5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a set of my stock tires and steelies on reserve with decent tread. I'm currently rollin on Yokohamas yk520's with chrome lexus rims with alot of tread left. I'm from socal, and i'm planning a 3 day trip up to big bear where there is most likely a lot of slush if not snow or ice. I'm going to be using chains on my tires.
Questions: Will taking my car up there damage my rims or my tires? Also with the use of the chains will it scratch up or damage my chrome rims? I feel safer with the yokohamas then the stock tires but I also don't want to mess up the rim.

Any experience from winter drivers?
get a rental and get over it....

if it don't snow on big bear it's ok to drive with normal tire and rim. If it does snow, i take my friend truck and snow cable. i can't use snow cable on my car since it is lower, otherwise just use snow chain and steelie.
There's no need to swap rims. I just swap winter tires on and off the same stock rims. I'm now entering my third winter and the stock wheels still look the same.
If you have some super duper expensive BBS wheels, then it would be a shame indeed. But for stock wheels or Lexus wheels? They're not worthy enough to care for.
Steelies are a good idea in general but the initial $200-250 investment is too high.

just put your stockies back on. They are all seasons right?
just take it easy in the snow... if you understand physics, then you will understand that you gotta take it easy in the snow.
anyways, the all seasons should be fine ... i've been rocking all-seasons in the winter for 3 years now. Never actualyl got the change to get winters but the all seasons are good enough for me.
Actually switching tires every season on the same rim, decreases the tire life, it'll eventually break down the bead on the tire. So it's easier and safe to just switch rims.....
I know you'regoing to come back and flame me about that, BUT my neighbour is a tire expert and has a family run business, well known for over 40 years.

not to mention reduce the risk of incidental damages to the wheel itself from mounting and dismounting twice a year. i think it'll also be cheaper in the long run to get separate wheels and tires for winter.

+1
Very true. Everytime I see that happening, I cringe a little inside.
