06 camry le 4 cyl transmission service

Is there special tools required to do a transmission service on a 06 Camry LE 4 cyl. What type of fluid is available aftermarket and what quantity is required. The local dealer wants $150.00

No special tools. The fluid is specified as Type - IV fluid, this fluid can be purchased in the aftermarket. Castrol has an import trans fluid specified for this type and also Mobil - 1 fluid is suitable for the Type IV fluid. My owners manual states fill for life if the vehicle use is "normal service" and every 60,000 miles if the car use is "severe service". I just did a drain and refill on mine about 30k with the regular castrol fluid and at 60k I will drop the pan and replace the filter and gasket and use synthetic Mobil - 1 trans fluid. I know my car is a Corolla but I think theses are good guide lines to go by. I called my buddy who works at a napa store and they have a trans fluid chart, according to his chart your car (4-cyl model) uses Type IV and the v6 model uses Toyota WS (World Standard) type fluid. Far as I know there is no aftermarket offering for the WS fluid, you have to go to the dealer. I would just double check your owner's manual or dealer for the fluid spec, sometimes there is a sticker on the dipstick which specifies the correct type of fluid.

When Harbor Freight is on sale get a set of the following for the drain plug. It'll be about the same price as one if you get the smaller 6 piece set:

I'd prefer to drop the pan and change out the filter. It'll likely plug up on you later. I'd get a 1/4"-drive torque wrench for the pan bolts and filter bolts.

You can use any dino Mobil-3309 compatible ATF (that's what dino Toyota T-IV is). Look on the label of many Walmart SuperTech ATFs or Castrol Import formula ATF.

WS is a synthetic formula. There are plenty of compatible fluids out there, but they specifically tell you that they don't meet the low temperature viscosity requirement of the WS. I personally don't think that would be a problem in most regions.

My 2002 Camry XLE was got certified used at 47K Now its at 83K miles. Back at 55K or so (I did a basic drain & fill from the tranny drain plug). That was only abt 3 Quarts.

Is dropping the pan & changing the filter a must?

I might have someone do it then at 90K. I'll still stick to the toyota type-IV & OEM filter.

Earlier ones use a screen strainer. Later ones uses a filter. It's supposedly "lifetime". Just depending on which side of seller/buyer you're on. In any case I'd want to clean the pan and magnets too.

Sure, stick with Toyota ATF and filter/gasket is fine. Check the filter price first. Whatever works for you.
