5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I own a gen5 Camry LE V6, I recently went to Canadian Tire to pick up a oil filter and all they have is FRAM Wearguard. Has anyone used it or heard of it?? Cus I haven seen people said it's ok while others said it's really bad.....so I am kinda confused . Is it better than the Toyota Genuine oil filter?? thnx

i used fram on my 91 300zx for 10 yrs w/o a problem. my 05 camry i take to walmart for oil changes and use whatever they install on it. i would not be surprised if walmart uses fram for their oil filter changes. i have been going to walmart for about 5 yrs w/o any problems. bottom line: i recommend fram based on my experiences, their prices are favorable also. I don't see any advantages using toyota filters. for my wife mercedez benz i use purolator oil filters, so far so good.
Reviews online said FRAM something Guard is the worst. google it if you want. The regular FRAM is better but still cheaply made.
I have used regular FRAM without problems in my old 1996 i4 Camry but I never inspect the filter that I was replacing to see if the filter element inside is still intact.

No, it's not "better".
i think you're right, i read a post here a long time ago where they discussed the same issue, and someone posted a link to a site that had test and rated all the brands of filters (sorry im sure i'll never be able to find the site again but i remember the gist of it). Fram came in about dead LAST, Purolater, the other most commonly avilable one, tested much better then fram. Ever since i read that i only buy fram when nothing else is in stock at the store that day, i buy purolater or some other brand (many store brand filters are made by either fram or purolater and simply put a different name on the filter actually).
Fram is good to ok. I use it on my corolla because my manual says so. If you have a new car like yours or my 07 Camry, i would get OEM Toyota filter. Actually i would buy everything OEM Toyota

I'd use a Purolator PureOne. Bosch Filtech is switching from Champion Labs filters to Purolator as well (they bought Purolator).
If you don't mind using a larger size filter Motorcraft FL400S too. Said to be a Purolator filter, similar to PureOne. Or you can ask for the oversized filter for the V6 or truck I4 if you insist OEM.

I used to use Napa filters, they had three different grades, silver, gold, and cheapest. Fram are great, they've entrenched the market, I've used them lots and they are sold everywhere. I hate going to the store for oil filters so I stock them now. I also stock up on oil when it's on sale. The OEM filters are easy to find, it seems a dealer is always wholesaling them on Ebay, I'm surprised Toyota lets them do that.
BTW, Mobil1 syn. oil is on sale at Walmart right now for 5.22 a quart. Make sure that if you go to the stock room to find more oil and do not remove the quarts from the 6 pack box, you will pay full price of 6.47 per quart, don't ask me why I know this.
