Hey Everyone,
I bought a 09 XLE, 4cyl about 11 months ago. Every since i bought it, everytime i turn on the a/c, the engine sounds like a flutter (a box truck engine), but when the a/c is off, it sounds normal. Before I bought this camry, i had an LE 09, 4cyl, never had the problem, gave up the LE and dealer gave me the XLE due to paint issues. I took it to several toyota dealers, they say it is normal, and they say they compared it to a like model? The 09 LE never sound like that, is the XLE engine sound normal...???
The engine does get a little louder when the AC kicks in, but i think you might be exaggerating a little bit. Compare it to another one yourself and see.
not exagerating, i had previous camry and other 4cyl cars, i know its gets RPM kicks up a slight when the compressor kicks on, but with this car, when the a/c is on, it really sounds like a like a flutter, and alot of people ask what is wrong with your car, why is it making that noise... but dealer say its normal....
Wish I could help but my 08 XLE is quiet as a church mouse even with the AC on. ALthough I really don't know how much noise a church mouse makes...

The engine runs great, soft, but the sound it makes when the a/c compressor is on, it makes a new car sound old, lol. I will clean the MAF sensor see if it helps, but since i bought this 09, its been like that! oh well....
the metal sheet that covers the front of the engine exhaust area, was vibrating against it, was not tight enough....the bolt it down, and very very quiet now. I'm happy about it now...

And now every owner with same malady has a place to look.

Glad they found the problem and fixed it for you. I'm sure you are relieved it's something so minor.
That said, I hate when dealers just brush you aside with the "it's normal" routine. That's why I suggested earlier they show you what they are comparing it to, after they made that statement. Sorry for my rant, but dealers who just blow off customers who have spent $20,000 - $30,000 on their new car should face some kind of repercussions, or they will just keep doing it. I hope somebody from Toyota corporate is still reading these forums.
