motor mount that attaches to pass. strut broken- why?

I was about to order a new serpentine belt for our '03 Camry 2.4 (90k mi), and I noticed something nearby was worn out. There's a circular rubber thing, I'm guessing a motor mount, since it attaches the passenger side strut tower to the engine. The rubber inside it is all cracked and broken.

A couple of questions... I'm surprised it's broken, since no accidents... is this a 100k mi part? Is it imperative that I replace it, or is it of relative unimportance? I am definitely going to do the serpentine belt though!

Thanks again

that part is most likely a moving engine rod or "dog bone mount". i replaced mine at 66k on '00 Solara 2.2 i4 - it was also cracked and rubber broken.

you should take a closer look at other engine mounts, because when one of them breaks apart then the others are under more stress and can deteriorate faster.

the steering wheel virates only at idle, and then it's not much. Otherwise not at all.

i can add from own exp that after i replaced dog bone, my engine doesn't jump up and down (it's smooth now) like it used to when shifting gears between forward vs reverse.

you have three motor mounts, they break down from heat, air pollution, road gunk, acids. They should be replaced, if not your engine will start to sag or lean over. your air box may become detached from the air intake plumbing if the engine leans over enough.

That's commonly called the "Dog Bone" because of its shape. If this one goes, you might want to check other engine mounts on the bottom of the engine, where they attach the engine to the subframe.

Yeah, 100K miles isn't bad. Many rubber things can go bad around here. Typically give or take +/- 20K miles. Other things, for example, are alternator brushes (called alternator brush assembly, $20 at the dealer). I'd preventatively do the water pump and radiator hoses as well, depending on how long you're going to keep that car. However, your engine has a known cylinder head bolt thread disintegration problem. Probably a metallurgical defect from the use of an insulation. They're reported to show up after about 80K miles.

Toyota issued a TSB 2 years ago about this failure: TSB 01507, NHTSA #10021542, Dated April 6 2007. I guess most people are out of the powertrain warranty by now.

Also AERA issued:

Coolant Loss on 2002-2006 Toyota 2.4L, 2AZFE engines

The following information concerns the loss of coolant on some 2002-2006 Toyota 2.4L, 2AZFE engines. The location of this condition has been noted at the rear of the engine where the cylinder head bolts to the cylinder block.

It has been reported that stripped head bolt threads have been found on some of these engines during tear down. When the two rear head bolts lose their clamping ability they allow coolant to seep out at the rear of the cylinder head.

To repair this condition, engine builders report using thread repair tooling used for various GM engines. Specifically, Cadillac 4.6L engines use the same threaded head bolts (Figure 1). The head bolts for this Toyota engine may be reused if they are not damaged and meet the following length specification.

Using a vernier caliper, measure the length of the head bolts from the seat to the end.

Specified bolt length: 6.350˝ to 6.465˝ (161.3 mm to 164.2 mm). If the length is greater than the maximum, replace the bolt.

This information was provided by the Engine Builders Association (AERA).

thanks for the help - rock auto has the dog bone for under 60, I'll order that with a serpentine belt and knock it all out sometime. BTW, after owning seven cars I have to say the Camry is the easiest to work on.

not sure if it was mentioned but engine mounts tend to get shot much earlier if you like pressing hard on gas pedal
I'm currently at 68k with my '00 Solara SE i4 and after replacing dog bone and other mounts inspections I decided to replace all of them... I also had to fix a broken flex pipe (it goes bad too if bottom mounts are bad) ...

also, really not sure if it's worth it to go aftermarket with engine mounts if you can get OEM real cheap from online Toyota parts stores (dealers selling via Trademotion platform). most of them are nowadays in price ranges comparable to aftermarket ones and also OEM are supposed to last longer.

just a thought.

Stay away from rock auto: their database is inaccurate and you will end up paying more plus a headache.

Dog Bone

The part you need has gone through a "type3" physical change with Toyota which means they had a problem with them or switched vendors. The new part number is 12363-28061 and is pretty cheap at magauto .

If a dog bone went bad, you might want to inspect the large mounts to make sure they're still ok.
