Broke Belt Tensioner Bolt 2004 2.4L Camry Please Help

First let me say hi, long time lurker and always go here when I need to search for a question to be answered.

Anyways, to the business... I just went to change the serpentine belt on my XLE 2004 2.4 L Camry. Have done this on all sorts of previous vehicles, GT mustang, 2000 Vette etc... no problem. This was the most difficult belt I have ever changed. Long story short, the bolt that you slip the socket over to release tension broke off .

Luckily for me, as this happened the belt slipped over the alternator pulley so with some finagling I was able to get the belt seated. (Otherwise I would have had an unoperable car).

If someone could please tell me what would be inolved to install the necessary tensioner arm or what part that bolt is a part of, or what I would be looking at for a shop to do it I would appreciate it.

I can't believe this happened. I realizeI could always trade the car in and let it be someone elses problem but planned on just keeping the car for a while.

By the way, I was not using a breaker bar, nor am I the Hulk. I think it was just maybe a bad casting.

Just looked up the part, only 150 bucks so not too steamed... looks like only two bolts, can this be replaced without removing the engine? Perhps also removing the left side upper engine mount when looking at the car from the front would help?

By the way, it took me two hours, and even with the tensioner seemingly bottomed out, the belt would not slip over any pulley, used a dayco poly rib 5070763 (guy looked it up for me at auto parts store), and I believe the 763 belt is the correct length.. so I do not know what the issue was. I am just glad that when it broke, it slipped on.

Can you tap it and Red Threadlock a short bolt on there? Gates on rockauto is about $108 + shipping.

Toyota had problems with tensioners during those years. Squealing and noisy. TSB'ed them. Must be a cheap batch.

Your first priority is getting the old bolt out and there are several ways to do that. Since its at the passenger side of the engine clearance is no doubt tight and there are a couple workarounds for this.

Lets start with getting the bolt out. Remove all the parts around it that you can, to gain access to whats left of the bolt. If there is a stub sticking out, grab it with vice grips and try removing it that way, if it is broken off flush, try and use a small drill (you may need a sideways type drill) and drill a small hole in the very center (it wont be easy i know) and get an easy out on it and remove it.
At worst you may have to drill out the bolt, and then you could use a bolt insert or helicoil to fix it that way.

back to the clearance issue - not alot of space to work there after all. To get more space, you can support the engine with a piece of wood and a hyrdaulic jack. then remove the front engine mounts and loosen or remove the rear mounts and the transmission mounts. then jack up the front of the engine to give you more room to work. (be sure and leave at least one engine mount loosely attached if possible, or support the engine with the bar and chain across the engine compartment - so the engine doesn't fall out.)
Keep on eye on your wires and cables attached to the engine while you do this, you will stretch them by jacking the engine, make sure you dont break a wire - remove it, disconnect it or unbolt its clamp or guide to give you a few more inches to raise the engine.

I haven't seen many of these engines so i have no exact idea where the bolt is BUT depending on where your broken bolt is located - it may be easier to access it through the RF wheel well (and tilt the engine down if you have to).

Sorry to revive a dead thread but any luck with this? Does anyone know how long the two bolts that hold the tensioner pulley assembly to the block is? If it's short enough to back out completely without hitting the passenger strut tower sheet metal, I do not see a huge problem. Just cut the belt if still on the pulleys, get an open ended rachet wrench and remove the bolts and remove the broken tensioner assembly. And reverse to re-install. Anyone have experience replacing this without moving the motor?
