5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Wanted to get some feedback and reviews from some of you who already own one. I have read a review or two on edmunds about the new camry having and issue with the engines, again that was based on only a couple reviews and not too sure how credible they are. Also: I would like to know between the 4 and 6 cyl, which is more reliable if any?
Are all of you happy with you purchase overall? Does the car feel nimble and ride smooth? Two of my buddies have solaras and they both have over 200k miles on them and still ride better than just about i have ever been in.
On a side note i was considering getting a 06+ gs300, i know i know its a whole different car but if the camry could be a more practical alternative why not.
well if you are looking at an '07+ SE, there are actually 3 possible engines. There are 2 possible 4cyl engines. The '07-'08 have the tried and true 2AZ-FE engine which produces 158HP. Some people say it's underpowered but I have an '02 XLE 4cyl and I find it has adequate power. But as far as reliability goes, it's pretty much bullet proof. Now, the '09+ SE's have the new 2.5L 2AR-FE which produces 179HP. I haven't heard much about these engines as they are still new, but I haven't heard of anyone having any major issues. And of course, there is the 2GR which is the V6 and it makes 268HP.
If you want practicality and/or a manual tranny, go for the 4cyl. If you want speed and power, then get the V6. Honestly, as far as mpg goes, the V6 gets close to the same mileage as the I4. And as far as reliability goes, the I4 will probably be a little more reliable and cheaper to maintain, but all the engines mentioned will most likely last 200k+ miles if well-maintained.

Manual tranny is only available on a 4-banger.
I love my car... has it treated me well? No, but it still drives.

I recommend the V6. I think that a 4 cylinder engine in a large car like the Camry is sluggish and takes out any possible fun in driving.
My car will turn 3 years old in a month or 2 and the engine has been perfect and very strong. With the V6 Camrys, it's the transmission that is the worry point. My first tranny died about 1.5 years in and now I'm on tranny number 2.
However, complete tranny replacement was usually only heard of on 2007 and some 2008 cars. I haven't heard of issues as serious as mine were on 2009 and 2010 cars...
