Air Filter Change, Help, 4 cyl 2007, EDIT- Now w/pics

I changed the air filter and noticed the new air filter sticking out a bit on the left side facing me (not the firewall). Same problem as this thread. why is a little bit of engine air filter(white part) showing? is this normal? I don't remember seeing it before I changed the filter.

It seems like the housing isn't sealing perfectly. Some people say it's normal and others say it's not. What's the consensus? If it's not normal how do I fix it?

The square corner of the filter goes on the left side toward the firewall, right?

If I close the box without any filter, it's obvious that the two halves fit very easily and the bolts fall into their holes without any help. With the filter, you need to adjust the bolts a bit.

njerald says there were 3 or 4 other threads on this topic, but I couldn't find them.

EDIT:

I finally got around to taking pics of what the problem looks like. I know I put the filter in correctly. I'm using a Fram.

Air filter is the white thing.

1st pic: Problem area is circled
2nd pic: View from the battery side
3rd pic: View from the engine side

Anybody else have an air filter that sticks out like this? Please note whether you're using a Toyota filter or not.

You have to follow the tab, match the shape of the filter with the air box. My K&N fits perfectly.

I have my DIY somewhere in here..

Ok I checked it this morning and the filter follows the shape of the air box so it was placed correctly. Any other position wouldn't close the box.

I still don't know why I can see that corner of the air filter. Depending on placement, I can also see a sliver of the left edge. I used a Fram, but the original factory filter does the same thing. I guess this is normal.

I looked at mine before I replaced it for the first time. Changed it (very easy to do) and it looks the same as before I changed it - you can see just a very small part of the left edge (looking at it from the front of the car.)

If the cover is snug against the fileter, then don't worry about it. You may have bought an after market filter and from experience they all aren't made exactly nor do they fit precisely as oem.

Most likely its not going to fit perfectly snug like an OEM would. but its normal as long as it fits in the box and get the right theading on the bolts.

The sharp corner has to be in the far left corner when looking at the air box from the front of the car.

my V6 has the same thing, don't worry about it, it's just a little on the edge. If you didn't put it in correctly, you wouldn't be able to close the lid

I was concerned because it doesn't seem like a good seal. I don't want any dirt getting into engine through the edges. It would defeat the purpose of the filter.
