Camry Software Gremlins?

Four old Camry, I4, automatic.

Driving car, dash lights went out briefly. Stopped car, placed in neutral engine died. Multiple attempts to start it, finally started. Original battery but when the starter engaged engine turned over strongly.

Multiple time would not start. When did dash lights would blink off and on.

Thought maybe switch in shifter.

Engine would jump start with no problem. Put shift in neutral--engine died.

Jump started again drove it dash lights blinked, then stayed on then power was being lost while driving so gave more gas, rpm to 3000, speedometer read zero mph yet car was moving about 20 mph. Then car was just fine for several miles so could get it home.

In for diagnosing and fixing.

Any ideas of the problem?

Camry with Gremlins

It was the battery and possibly a bad battery cable.

Cheap fix

Dash lights flashing and such could indicate computer or ECU related problems that people are saying were responsible for recent deadly Toyota runaways. But in your case it's luckily stalling.

Have the dealer document everything, especially the instrument lights flashing part and battery strength, in case your car decides to accelerate out of control later and rear end another like Eric Weiss in the article below:

Read:
Feds Probe Random Stalling Reports in 2 Toyota Models:
http://www.detroitnews.com/article/2...-Toyota-models

Electronic throttles may be responsible for runaways:
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-f...,5254584.story

Claims of "Intermittent radio waves or electronic interference will lock down the cruise control and the brakes won't override the system"

Have the problem clearly documented. Even if the dealer shove you out the door saying everything is "normal".

It's definitely not the battery. Any other symptoms?

New battery and cable have solved the problem to date. Car driven a hundred miles yesterday. It was started and stopped during the time probably about 50 times.

Thanks for your replies. I find it hard to believe that a battery and cable solved the problem--but my in depth experience in cars dates back to the 50s and 60s.

Install DOORS is more important.

Anyway, get it to the dealer and let them troubleshoot the problem. It doesn't sound simple as car battery problem. Just be glade U survive and didn't kill any1.

I think this lends credence to control module problems some claimed. If it's as simple as electrical problems like a battery and cable, then it would be quite unfortunate that people died because of it.
