My sister seems to have to change the airfilter on her I4 2005 camry LE at not much more than 15K intervals. At a cost of 16$ not to mention the 10$ midas just charged (for install) there has to be a better solution. The route is strictly city - houston - so dirt should not be much of an issue. In talking with the service guy yesterday, he said that the filter cannot be just blown out with an aircompressor because it uses a 'microfilter'. The microfilter was in response to fuel injectors that had flow probs because regular injector flushes/maint were not being done.
Is their an aftermarket OEM filter that has longer change intervals based on your experienceS?
Or where can they be purchased in bulk?
I did some searching and could not find anything.
The shop also wanted to do a trans fluid and PS fluid flush and Im not seeing that as being recommended at 60K. I agree that its probably needed in the next 10K miles.. just as a good PM practice. I tend to also do brake and radiator flushes in the 60-75K range also.

Get a K&N Drop-In Air Filter. Its reusable and permanent (as in never have to throw away). Its $40-50 depending on where you buy it and if there is a sale at the time. You can clean it whenever you want whether it be 10,000 miles, 20,000 miles, 50,000 miles (suggested by manufacturer) or by years (1, 3, 5, etc.).
You can get it at Pep Boys, Auto Zone, R&S Strauss, eBay and any other auto store in your area. There is no need to pay $10 or any amount to have it done. If you can open a lid on a canister or a cap on a bottle, you can do this yourself. Its a matter of lifting up clamps or screws, lifting cover up/off, remove old filter, insert new filter, close cover and put back clamps/screws.
Its best to have a stock OEM (either new or used) to drive around while K&N filter is drying. You DO NOT want to drive while the oil/lubricant is still wet.
Im familar with oiled elements but if the long term durability/drivability was affected by infrequent Inj cleaning, wont that still be an issue with a K&N?
Are there I4 (or even v6) motors that have experienced driveability problems in the 150K+ range?
Being she and I don't live in the same town, I can't be confident that regular cleaning will be done of a k&n.

K&N is not as big and restricted as the OEM microfiber/paper filters. Theres more airflow since K&N is smaller in thickness.
I've had K&N drop in air filter in my '95 Taurus and '96 Jetta..both with over 150k and drove fine. I still did regular maintenance.
As stated before, there is no need to do regular cleaning. You can clean the K&N every 50,000 miles. But since you said that she drives on dusty roads, even 25,000 miles is fine. I highly doubt, she does that much in 1 year. On average, 12k-14k is what a person does in a year.
Can you explain the link between microfilter and injector flushes. Typically Toyota fuel injectors rarely need cleaning. Gasoline already has cleaners blended into it.
Have you actually looked at the old air filter. The repair shop may be changing it prematurely to make a few extra $$.
I don't think Toyota has any recommendations for trans and PS fluid changes in the service info. If the trans has a dipstick guessing uses T-IV, make sure the shop uses the right type of fluid! The fluid type info should be stamped on the trans dipstick.
Are you asking about 2005 I4 engine problems, then yes. Review past Camry posts for this generation of car to get an idea.

It was my car previous to the Camry and a hand-me-down (had the Cam and Taurus at the same time for a year). We donated the car to charity over the summer along with my sisters Jetta. The Taurus still worked but had no need for it and the Jetta was completely dead right after we bought new muffler for it. NO need to have 4 cars when only 3 people drive in the household.

I also just installed KN filter last month. It works great so far, and my car creates better sound when I floor it . What I'm wondering is how long should I clean it. I know they recommend to clean it between 50K intervals, but with the OEM filter it got really dirty at 13K miles

Its up to you and driving conditions. If you drive in dusty areas, you might want to clean sooner. I took mine out at around 14k and it didnt seem dirty except for an area that was black. I wont be changing it for awhile.
With the OEM filter, you'll notice it because its white and bigger.

my city isn't really dusty, so I guess I'll clean it around 20k-25k miles.
