5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey fellas, was wondering what performance mods are available for our gen 6s? and before you jump the gun, i did a search, read up on handfuls of topics and gathered the following and read in detail about
- turbo (with help from peach)
- suspension set ups, and strut sway bars
- tyres
- cold air intake/sports panel filter
- exhaust
- brakes
But what im trying to gather here is really, ways to improve acceleration (including other engine upgrades and ways to get quicker gear changes) and other than making the car lighter and the above mentioned. Also i was wondering if someone would elaborate on tunning options too
None of the Gen 6 I4s has the Power button. I think he was joking about your car having it... I want to say the 96 was the last model year to have a power button.
Frankly absolutely nothing worth spending money on. It's just too much car for too little engine.
On the plus side a Camry like yours has stupidly good resale in the Australian market; so save some cash, sell the Camry and buy an Aurion. Or better still buy a Falcon XR6 turbo or LS1 Commodore. It's a waste of money trying to make a four banger Camry fast. I know it's different for the US guys but here in Aus it is extremely difficult to find any after market parts for a Camry, even something as basic as struts is difficult. If you want a fast car the Commodore and Falcon both have absolutely everything imaginable for them off the shelf and have quite poor resale, making them cheap to buy. Or grab a late model Skyline/ 200SX/ Soarer/ Supra/ Chaser/ Aristo. The Camry is just about the worst thing possible to modify over here, not to mention it's not exactly a sports car to start off with.
I know what your sayin asterioid, and i completely agree with you. but im only 18 years of age so i wont be changing my car for maybe 5 years so i better make most of it. I really dont like the ford and holden cars (but i can appreciate them) but they arnt for me. as for the jap cars, i love them though its not practical for me either. I made a mistake, but in my oppinion not a big mistake on not saving for an extra 6 months to buy a base model aurion, but ohwell. i like the look of the camry 50x more than the aurion so ill stick with my decision and build on something that i already got
but putting all that aside, what performance mods are possible. not taking into hand how hard it will be to source parts.
I think the Aus spec gen 6 is basically the same as the US spec gen 6, so you're not completely out of luck (do check this though!). My gen 5 is completely different so no US parts fit - I gave up lol.
For some relatively inexpensive worthwhile mods; import a set of extractors from the states and have an exhaust fabricated locally. Get some nice wheels (and tyres!) for it and fit lowered springs (Pedders springs are probably the go here), fit an upgraded rear sway bar (again Pedders or import one), fit high performance struts or coil overs (you'll probably need to import these, I doubt there's anything local).
After that your car will look and sound decent and should handle well (with good alignment and set-up), won't really be much faster but it should still be plenty of fun for a young guy. I assume it's an auto? In a couple of years get something that takes your fancy.
Before you delve into it too deeply be completely sure imported parts will fit the Australian chassis as Toyota Aus have altered the design quite substantially in the past for local production. There's an aussie guy here with a modded Aurion, hopefully he can chime in.
Thanks for the advice there asteroid. Currently waiting to lower my ride now as i got a set of 19s on them. exhaust will come probably after i do my LE to SE conversion as i gave up on trying to find places and ways to ship body kits from the US to australia (though im still trying)
After that, ill do audio and at the same time travel down to my local pedders and see what they can do for me. Im aware of the mods you have mentioned, but i thought maybe someone out there can give me some new info regarding these as ive observed off cardomain and here that you fellas in the US are improving performance and all that on your I4s (special shout outs to peach and kenny especially)
but the best advice ive probably received regarding this so far, is what you mentioned about parts that will come from the US fitting here. so far i know the grille in the US fits here, but thats about it as far as i know so ill keep that piece of advice in mind mate.
once again, thanks for your reply mate. much appreciated

You know the US spec SE is identical to the local Sportivo? Same trim/ suspension/ body kit etc. You can get the factory kit here, but it will be EXPENSIVE! I was quoted $550 for my front lip alone, the gen 6 will be just as much. :o
