So how does the gap insurance work? Your car is totaled, your insurance company only pays the current bluebook value, and the gap insurance pays the remaining amount / debt that you still owe the bank?

correct! it's still weird to see people decline
gap coverage on a newly purchased vehicle.
it it would be stupid of someone to decline it, well i thought of it and now im glad i got it and its going to save me round 4 grand.
Not always. if someone gets a good enough deal on a car, especially one that holds its value (So obviously this does not apply to Chevy or Dodge/Jeep/Chrysler cars).
I bought my 2009 brand new with no gap insurance. I got a long 75 month loan with low payments. And yet, my KBB value is more than what I owe after 10 months of ownership. If I went and totaled my car, Gap insurance would not have to pay anything.
your right paul. thats why it's best to get a car hit from the back. no air bag deployment and damage to frame is different so much more repairable. still with right machines and a good body guy, you can get this car fixed and driving like new again or atleast close to it.
