USA 2010 SE questions

Hi all,

This is my first post to the forums since I just bought a metallic grey 2010 SE with the 2.5L 2ar-fe engine, am/fm/xm/cd with bluetooth and mp3 player input. So far, I'm very pleased with the purchase and the car is just wonderful. I have a few questions about the car and optional modifications. For perspective, I am am not looking to make this car fast - I understand it's a 4-cylinder. However, every little bit of HP helps. Here's my list...

1) From a modification perspective, what's the difference between the 2.5L 2ar-fe engine and the 2.4L 2az-fe engine? Specifically, would the CAI for the 2az-fe fit the 2ar-fe? Does the exhaust manifold measure the same - in case I felt like adding headers and/or a turbo in the future?

2) Are there any known chips/ECU reprograms/reprogrammers for my engine?

3) Has anybody purchased the Qualir aftermarket naviagation units for this car, and if so, are they any good?

4) The dual exhaust on the 2010 SE - is it a TRD cat-back? Would the TRD-cat-back add any hp?

Thanks for your time,
Matt

First, welcome to TN.

In response to "I understand it's a 4-cylinder. However, every little bit of HP helps." That little HP, you wont notice a difference nor would it do much. So adding 5HP, will be nothing and you wont be able to tell.

1. Difference between 2.5 and 2.4 is that 2.5 has slightly more HP/torque. Intakes should fit. There might be some threads with some people showing off their mods on their 2010. Another option would be to check cardomain.com

2. Dont know.

3. Never heard of it. Search for forums as there has been many aftermarket OEM look-alike headunits discussed

4. The exhaust that comes with the car is not a TRD exhaust. if you want TRD exhaust you will have to purchase it and have it installed. Unless you discuss with salesman during negotiation and pricing of car. If not, exhaust will cost you $750-950 depending on the type of deal you can get.

The TRD exhaust is a catback. It will not any big HP gains at all. Its more of look and sound. More information about TRD exhaust can be found on forums. Please do a search on it.

Try URD MAF Sensor calibrator. It posted on their site it worked on a camry, Email Gadget and ask him about it, i'm sure he can point you in the right direction. You would need to solder it into your ECU or pay someone to do it for you.

Thanks for the replies. I've decided that were I to mod this car, I would just go for an STS Turbo kit which replaces the muffler with a turbocharger and then get either the URD sensor or a unichip for a tuner to tune properly. It appears they recently did a 2.4L 2AZFE Scion with an untuned output of around 200HP. You can see it on youtube.

I saw a number of other after-market navigation units but have decided to stick with what I have (the standard AM/FM/XM/CD for now.

My next question: how might adding a turbo and/or a piggyback ecu affect the warranty of the car? I'm looking for honest answers/guesstimates and real-world examples if any exist, not legal statements.

Thanks.

Serious question here. I suffer a serious generational gap with some of you guys. Why would you buy a new car with a small engine and then immediately go out and seek ways of improving the horsepower? If you think you have enough money for a turbo, then most assuredly you had enough to buy the V6, have another 100 hp without modifications, with no threats to the warranty, and be able to go faster, quicker, than any state or province permits. Still after all these years, the fastest way to extra power is to paint flames behind the wheel wells. In the mean time, it is much easier to write a check to the dealer one time for that V6 than to buy an I4, then redo the intake, exhaust, and cai, and then hope that the extra 10 hp or so will even be noticed.

200HP after an expensive turbokit is garbage. I actually love STS setups, but think they're way overpriced. The turbo they provided for the scion is way too underrated for what its capable of.

Adding a turbo will void your warranty, plain and simple. Good luck with the turbo kit if you do go through with it. STS turbos sound pretty badass, and i'd love to see it on a camry.

My thoughts behind this are that I happen to like turbocharged vehicles - they are more fuel-efficent than bigger engines. Also, I didn't really consider that I might really want the six -my previous vehicle was a 4-cylinder turbocharged car that I really loved for it's power and fuel economy - so I went with another four banger. In addition, I certainly make enough money to afford the six if I wanted it.

Frankly, it's just a matter of fact that a lot of people want to customize their cars. I like different things, I also like the car that I bought, and making a bit more power is desirable to me. I don't anticipate that I will actually do anything to this car as it's under warranty, but I was just posing the question should the desire overtake me.

Thanks Peach, that's all I really needed to know. I'm just going to wait until this car is out of warranty.

Buy the turbo from Peach. He has a thread of it for sale in the forum. Up to 300hp (at the wheel) on a 4 banger.

I saw it but it's for a different engine (2azfe). The turbo kit from STS is the only thing I'm really interested in - when the time comes. I think the 200hp on the scion is way underrated as well, and it doesn't seem that $1695 is too bad for the turbo kit alone - that's the price on the website for the universal kit.

Thats expensive.

they're forgetting the piggyback ECU or the standalone, which will easily run over 1,000. Tune is another 400-600 depending on where you go. Exhaust piping, mandrel bending.. Bigger Headers (Since Squire doesn't use turbo manifolds). This project will run you up on the bill more than you think.

I'm not trying to discourage you. I'm just being honest. I've been down the turbo road, so I know what to expect.
