odd stereo question

I really like the fact that my Camry has a cassette and cd player in it. The cassette deck makes a ticking noise and you can hear a speed variation with each click, its like a ticking noise once every hub revolution. Been looking around for a replacement stock radio because they are less attractive to theives. Heres my question: My Camry is a 2003 SE and everything lights up amber colored my GF has a 2003 LE and everything is that green and grey blue, hers is the JBL six disc changer, mine is the single cd unit. if I buy another factory radio, will it light up a different color if I dont ask if its the amber display? or is that part of what the programing does? are there places where I could get the unit I already have fixed and cleaned? a new one is 535 wothout the changer and 935 with one, and thats too much money.

I'm pretty sure the new stereo will still tick. My cassette player has always made that noise but it's not noticeable unless the volume is almost as low as it can go.

My '02 LE came with a JBL single CD player with cassette player. In the interest of tearing my initial stock JBL radio apart to experiment with, I purchased another JBL radio with the 6 disc changer with cassette player (from Ebay for about $125) for the very same reason (stock, not attractive to thieves). I have never had noise issues with the JBL 6 disc radio cassette player, but I consider myself lucky - you never know what nuisances Ebay electronics may come with.

This Ebay seller allows returns, for this radio:

If you can't find an amber-colored radio to buy...
One route to keep your amber-colored radio is to purchase the exact JBL radio from Ebay, making sure all the buttons in front match (that is, a unit with single cd/cassette player); plug it into your car to see if you still hear the ticking noise in question. If the new radio doesn't have any noise issues, you might be able to swap the front "faceplates" between the two radios to keep your amber-colored buttons - no special tools required, just some screwdrivers.

I don't know what your experience is in removing the radio and all, but you can probably search for it on these forums. There are techniques and/or tools to use to avoid scratching your dash.

Can't say what your issue could be though, given that the ticking corresponds with speed. Any aftermarket stereo components from the radio to the speakers? Poorly routed power and/or speaker wires could create or pick up noise.

Goodluck!

Se model stereo will only light up amber. le and xle are green. I don't anywhere that will clean and fit the unit. you can consider upgrading to a double din unit. or buy a use stock se stereo. I got one if interested.

Technically, you can make any of these light up any color you want; just depends on what you put in front

But yes, the easiest, most straightforward route is to get a JBL unit from another Camry SE.
