2004 Camry LE had transmisson rebuilt. Toyota refuses to compensate. Any recourse?

I have a 2004 Camry LE 4 cylinder, 95K miles now. The transmission broke at 90K miles. 04 Camry I4 Transmission Problem-flare?
I got it rebuilt and had the water pump changed at the same time for $1600 in Los Angeles. The cost for rebuilding transmission is $1300. I read on website yesterday that recent year Honda Accord V6 owner had transmission problem as well. Honda was sued in a class action lawsuit and agreed to extend the warranty coverage up to 100 K miles and 7 years. (I am not 100% of settlement detail. Please double check) Honda dealership knew about the transmission problem and agreed to cover half the cost of repairing transmission no question asked even when the car is out of warranty. http://cl.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=483561
http://www.lemonlawclaims.com/honda_...ion_failur.htm

I called Toyota today and the lady refused any compensation. She spoke to the manager and refuse to even cover half of the cost. I asked her to check whether there's TSB issued on transmission and there's none.

I hope you guys don't have the transmission problem or if you do, get it repaired when it's under warranty.

I wouldn't had asked for compensation but it's a camry, it's not supposed to have a broken transmission just barely out of 5 years of ownership and within 100k miles.

Any recourse?

I can completely understand your frustration but I fail to see why Toyota is responsible to cover a repair when you're 35K miles out of warranty. There aren't any known issues with the 4 or 5 speed auto mated to the 2.4L I4 so I don't see why they'd cover anything.

Did you properly maintain your transmission? Like checking the fluid? They say their Type T-IV fluid doesn't need to be replaced until 100K miles but I replaced mine at 25K miles and there was a definite improvement afterward. I now change it annually.

Your past posts stated something about changing the fluid to Mobil 1.

Exxon states this fluid is compatible with Toyota T-IV but anyone else care to chime in.

It might be best to stick with T-IV even though it is more expensive. The Mobil equivalent is ATF 3309 which appears to be difficult to find.

Like everyone else, why would you think Toyota will compensate half of the bill for you, especially after your warranty was gone after 60k miles? Toyota isn't at fault here and you just got a bit of bad luck to have your transmission blow out on you. Both of my Gen 5-5.5 camrys never had any issues and my Gen 5 has over 170k miles without any problems. It could be the way you drove it perhaps?

this.

It sucks, but unfortunately you are out of luck. If your warranty is expired then Toyota has absolutely no obligation to you.

what exactly was the problem with the transmission? was it skipping gears or slipping/failing to engage?
