Steering wheel squeek!

my stering wheel kind of whines or squeeks, I have heard of people hearing thuds, but mine is more like a squeek when turning the wheel, my gf's 2003 le has the same prob, sounds like it needs some kind of oil. anyone else solve this problem?

My dad's 2003 camry does too. I think I'll take a look at it soon.

This is a very common quirk with gen 5's

there is a "litte metal thingy" <-- lol I'm sorry I don't know the exact name of the part. It's a cylinder-like apparatus near the bottom of the steering column that you will see up behind and above your gas and brake pedals.

grab some silicone lubricant, lubricate it, and your problem is solved.

thanks wouldnt that be funny if the R&D department of Toyota coulnt come up with a name for it either. Then one day thumbing through your manual you would see a "little metal thingy" and an arrow pointing to it?

Excatly as ScrooYoo stated...up above the pedals you will see steering colunm, if you are not sure which one it is twist the steering wheel and you will see it twist also...All you have to do is lubricate with oil I used WD-40 and spray the oil where the steering wheel column ends...lubricate and the squeeky sound goes away immidiately...Apply well while also twisting the steering wheel and you will be satisfied felt like having a new car again...Good luck

p.s even though it sounded like the sound was in the upper part of steering wheel...you will see it comes from down there

I wouldn't be using WD-40 on the rubber boot where the intermediate steering shaft goes through the fireewall. Use a ruber lubricant like silcone grease such as NAPA's Syl-Glyde or try a silcone spray. WD-40 is a light oil and will attack rubber despite what the maker claims it can be used for.
