5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2010 - 4 Cyl. Camry for almost 3 months now.
when I start the car in the ( cold ) morning or evenings when I am going back home the shifting is really harsh. First I thought because it is too cold so I warmed up the car for 5 minutes but harsh shifting is still there.
the next day I warmed up the car for 10 mins. , problem is still there .
I took the car to dealership service and they said every thing is fine and we don't see any problem, they told me it is normal for cold weather.
Guys when I am talking about harsh shifting I mean whole car is shaking when I put the gear to reverse or to drive with a BAMM sound.
After I drive for lets say 100 m , harsh shifting goes away and works smoothly.
Would you please let me know if you have ever experienced this or if there is any solution for this issue?
I'd say try another dealership. My Camry is less than 1 month old and even though I live in Alabama it's been very cold here of late (not sure if its been above freezing for a week), and I've not seen this problem. I do however let the car sit for 60 seconds before I shift into reverse. Are you talking about the initial shift into reverse and drive or the shifting of the gears as you move? If its the former try stepping on the accelerator first to rev the engine and then try to shift. Let us know what you find out...

Well, I'm not a fan of the newer Aisin U-series transmissions. IMO, they're junk and you found out.
As far as the dealer goes, they're trying to shove you under the carpet. Talk to the service manager or test drive another one on the lot and see if it goes BAM! . Call the Toyota 1-800 service line and chat about it.
One TN member got three consecutive transmission flushes on his new Camry to get rid of whatever problem he had. Can't remember, but I don't think it's loud bam and the whole car trying to shake loose. Sounds bad. It seemed like Toyota was aware of that problem and gave the dealership explicit directions to flush 3 times, probably to clear out manufacturing metal shavings.

Thanks guys for all your inputs.
The worst shock is in first time I shift from park to revers/drive and after that in few seconds driving the harsh shifting gradually disappears.
This morning I started the car for few minutes and before shifting I pressed the gas pedal 2 times to rev up the engine , with big surprise when I shifted to reverse there were no shock and harsh shifting at all.
Normally I don't push the gas pedal before shifting but it seems I have to do that in cold weather.
What do you think is that shock and harsh shifting because of the cold lubricant in gearbox , after this morning I feel this has some thing to do with the oil in gearbox.
Ok so here's the bad news. I had this same problem, but it wasn't in my Camry. It was in the car I traded for the Camry. That car was a 1998 Saturn with 240K miles and a rebuilt trammy. Also it didn't happen right after the trammy was replaced. It started happening later on. Never did figure out what caused it...just how to get it to stop. I'd try whatever I could to get this fixed, or replaced.

Guys, I just wanted to give you an update on the issue on my car.
Finally after me insisting that the car has problem , they kept the car for one night and checked it the next morning , BAAMMMM.
The problem according to the service supervisor is the Transmission Temperature Sensor , next week they are going to replace the part, hope this solves the problem.
I purchased a 2010 Camry two months back and have been experiencing similar problem. When i start the car in the morning and drive, i will be able to feel harsh shifting whenever the car crosses 40 MPH mark.
It happens exactly at that point everytime. If the mercury goes below 45, it gets worse. Everytime i start the car, I leave it for for a min or two before i drive. This problem goes away if i drive the car for about a mile or two.
I took it to the dealer and they could not find anything and requested me to drop the car overnight to reproduce the problem. I am planning to do this next week.
I will be interested to know if tranmission temperature sensor fixes your problem.

I picked up my car this morning , the car was sitting on outside and freezing cold ( -15 C ) , so I turned on the car and changed the gear , NO Harsh shifting and no sound, I drove right away and car was riding smooth.
The Problem was the temp. sensor.
The error code from TDT scanner was P0713 : Trans fluid temp sensor a current low input.
So they said they have to replace wire transmission , I am just writing the changed parts as I see on report :
FP Number : C0009-WSATF-12
Description : OBS
Qty. : 4
that is all.
I suggest you take the car as soon as you can , because if the sensor dies the car will not shift to upper gear , that is what happened to me the sensor was reporting -40 C to the computer and the car was not shifting to higher gear.
Hope this help.
